TRY presents Akron students with Youth Service award for peace garden project

Salvatore’s Italian Gardens was the venue on Friday, Sept. 24, 2010 for the fourth annual Founder’s Award Dinner for Teaching and Restoring Youth (TRY), a residential treatment program for homeless young women located on Brinkman Avenue in Buffalo. The event featured the presentation of awards to individuals and businesses who have dedicated service and support to the organization. This year, a Youth Service Award was presented to Akron Central High School students who devoted their time and energies creating a peace garden at the TRY Home.


On Schedule

ON SCHEDULE - The Village of Akron and Town of Newstead Joint Public Works facility on Clarence Center Road is on schedule according to reports to the Newstead Town Board.


Akron Central student population up

Akron Central started 2010-2011 with 47 more students than were enrolled at the end of June. Superintendent of Schools Robin B. Zymroz provided Board of Education members with a grade level by grade level report comparison at their September 22 meeting. The changes were spread throughout the grades, with the largest increase in the freshman class (eleven students) and senior class (ten students) and the largest decrease in the sophomore class (four students). Grade 1 increased by seven, grade 2 by four, grade 3 by two, grade 4 and grade 5 by three each. Grade 6 was down by four, grade 7 up by 6 and grade 8 down by one. Grade 11 was down by one. Board members received a report from the Building Committee indicating work is continuing in the auditorium where a catwalk and new lights are being installed.

Ejections from local parks, arrests top APD blotter entries

Akron Police Chief Richard Lauricella reports several ejections from Akron Falls Park and Russell Park in the Village of Akron, as well as three arrests between August 25 and September 7.


Lady Tigers Cross Country team places sixth at West Seneca

Akron Central’s Lady Tigers cross country team competed in the West Seneca Invitational on Saturday, Sept.18, placing sixth out of seventeen schools competing in the race.


Live theater presentation coming to Ivy Ridge

An evening of adult Halloween Fun with a Dinner Theatre presentation of Witches Brew, featuring Enchante’ Cabaret, is planned in Newstead on Saturday, Oct. 30. Dukes at Ivy Ridge, Main Road, Akron, invites you to enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by Executive Chef Joe Tomei, served tableside at 6 p.m., in the ambiance of the Dukes main dining room.


Mini Tigers take down Cubs

The Akron Mini Tigers played a hard game against the BarLyn Cubs last Saturday. The Mini Tiger fought hard for this win and had a spectacular game thanks to all the coaches, cheerleaders and fans. Everyone is welcome to come cheer on this amazing team on Saturday, October 2 at Noon in Albion.


Newstead Historical Society Update

Rich-Twinn Octagon House and Knight Sutton Museum open on Sunday - The fall season is a great time to visit the Rich-Twinn Octagon House located at 145 Main Street along with her sister museum, the Knight-Sutton located just down the street at 123 Main Street. They’ll both be open this Sunday, October 3rd from 1:00PM to 3:00PM. Take in a late church service or lunch at one of our local restaurants before enjoying a leisurely tour of both of these intriguing buildings filled with history.


Public hearing planned on Town of Newstead budget

A public hearing on the preliminary Town of Newstead budget is set for October 25 at 7:45 p.m. at the Newstead Senior Center, 5691 Cummings Road, Akron, NY. Residents are welcome to attend the hearing to comment on the Preliminary Budget as compiled, or for or against any item or items in it.


Volunteers needed for 2011 Akron Relay for Life

Work is already underway for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Akron 2011 and many more volunteers are needed to keep this annual event successful. Everyone is welcome to become part of this event to help in the fight against cancer. The next meeting is Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
