Kristin Weeks named Coronat Scholar at Syracuse University

Akron Central School District has announced that Kristin Weeks, a senior at Akron High School, was recently named a Coronat Scholar at Syracuse University.


Akron Fire Company receives Department of Homeland Security grant

Akron Volunteer Fire Company is one of five Western New York fire companies received federal funds to help recruit new first responders. AFC receives $645,000 out of the first quarter of 2011 awards through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program.


Akron Relay for Life hoping for a purple town

The Akron Relay for Life committee is distributing “Paint the Town Purple” starter kits to businesses along Main Street and throughout the business district this week. They hope everyone will help “Paint the Town Purple” as part of thid nationally recognized celebration in support of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. On May 2, the committee is encouraging all Akron residents to decorate their yards, places of business, wear purple clothing, etc. “Get inspired and show us your hope! You can help us in the fight against cancer!” a committee member notes.


Boys Track team performs well at Buffalo Invitational

Akron Central School’s boys track team participated in the Buffalo Invitational at All-High Stadium which is located behind Bennett High School on Saturday, April 16. While weather conditions were not ideal for a track meet, with temperatures in the mid-40s and driving rain at times, the team was fortunate that the beautiful facilities at All-High Stadium included a well-covered bleacher area where athletes were able to stay perfectly dry when not competing.


Citizen, Business, and Organization to be honored May 19

Bill Frey will be honored as Citizen of the Year, Akron Optical Shop as Business of the Year and Hearts and Hands: Faith in Action as organization by The Akron Chamber of Commerce on May 19.


Community coming together to help second grader fight Leukemia

Lucas, a seven-year old, second grade student at Akron Central School was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. Family, friends, and the community members are working to make sure he has the resources necessary to meet the challenges this cancer brings. A group of concerned community members have organized a benefit which includes a spaghetti dinner, baked good sale, and a Chinese Auction on June 5 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at the Akron Fire Hall, Main St., Akron.

I can't believe I am writing a column about Social Security

AARP is flexing some muscle these days, revealing its true mission. Acting New York State Director David McNally issued a statement earlier this month, countering the spreading fear that Social Security is running out of money, putting millions of Americans' retirement plans in doubt.


Limerick Hall discussion scheduled next week

Newstead Town Board members are expected to talk about the appropriate future for the Limerick Hall at the corner of Clarence Center and Cummings Roads next Monday night.


May 16 deadline for Athletic Wall of Fame nominations

The Akron Central School District Athletic Wall of Fame committee is currently accepting nominations for the Wall of Fame’s induction class of 2011. Nominees must be ACS graduates of the Class of 2005 or earlier and nominated coaches must be retired from the district at least five years. The deadline to submit nominations is May 16, 2011, after which the Wall of Fame committee will convene to review the nominations and make their selection for the Class of 2011 inductees.


Parents ask Board of Education to accept donations to keep cheerleading

Akron Central School District parents and cheerleaders asked the Board of Education to allow them to fund raise and donate the costs associated with the cheerleading program.


Relationship course offered at C. Dee Wright Community Ministry Center

The C. Dee Wright Community Ministry Center, Church and John Streets in the Village of Akron will offer PREP: The Prevention Relationship Enhancement Program beginning in May.


Sheriff’s Deputies make arrest, respond to house fire

Genesee County Sheriff’s Deputies made a DWI arrest and responded to a house fire in Basom over the weekend.


Summer 2011 Rec. registration begins June 1

With the approval of the Summer 2011 Recreation Department Brochure and Calendars by the Recreation Board at last Thursday’s Rec. Dept. Board Meeting, the plans for the flagship Summer REC Program, scheduled to start on July 5th, are moving ahead. Until then, the only year round program that continues uninterrupted is the Morning Lap Swim Program. Lap Swim - “Start your Day with a Splash!” is the motto for the Morning Lap Swim Program, a year round swimming program to get your day off started right. It is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6-7:30am. The registration fee is $15 per month. The American Red Cross certified lifeguards currently on staff for the Morning Lap Swim include: Justin Hawes, Bo Izydorczak, Kaitlyn Kaufman, and Alan Seaner.

Two-Day Fourth of July celebration planned

A Two-Day Akron Fourth of July Celebration is planned for 2011. Akron Celebration Committee members are still working out the details but residents can mark their calendars for July 3 and July 4.
