Mid-day Summer Concert continues as Craig Wilkins performs at noon today

The 2011 Russell Park Summer Concert Series continues today, Thursday, August 4 at noon as Craig Wilkins is featured.


Akron Community Band featured in Buffalo News

The Akron Community Band was featured in the Buffalo News on Monday, August 1 in an article by Laura E. Winchester, Buffalo News Suburban Correspondent who covers the Akron/Newstead area. Robert Anderson, who is playing his 75th season with the Band was interviewed for the article, as was Director James F. Gerber. The Band will continue its eight-week summer concert season in Russell Park this Friday evening at 8 p.m. with a variety of numbers including marches, pop and show tunes, an overture, and more.

The Akron Police Dept. logged 436 entries, 12 suspicious incidents, 46 footpatrols, ejected 84 swimmers from Akron Falls Park, issued 64 traffic summonses and 59 calls for general service in the month of July. Below are a few of the complaints.


ACS Athletes reminded of mandatory ‘Life of an Athlete’ program dates

Akron Central School District Athletic Director Mr. Joseph Caprio reminds student athletes planning to participate in athletics for the 2011-12 school year to attend the “Life of an Athlete” program. This mandatory athletic program for JV and Varsity athletes is scheduled for Thursday, August 11, 2011 or Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Edward Allen Auditorium. Athletes with their parent or legal guardian must plan to attend either of the two program opportunities.


Akron High School releases Academic Achievement Roll

The Akron Central High School has released the Academic Achievement Roll for the last marking period of the 2010-2011 school year. Students achieving academic distinction follow:


Akron summer music students in concert Thursday

Summer music students from Akron and Lancaster Central Schools will present a combined concert at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 4 in the Richard Pascucci Memorial Band Shell in Lancaster.


August programs at Newstead Public Library available for all ages

All ages will find something to do at the Newstead Public Library, Main Street, Akron, NY this August.


Board of Education looks at possible administrative realignment

Akron Central Board of Education is considering a realignment proposal as they prepare to fill administrative positions left open by recent resignations. In a special meeting Tuesday night, the Board reviewed a list of possible positions to meet the needs of the District within the funding available in the budget for positions not currently filled. Suggested was a full-time Elementary Assistant Principal, a High School Assistant Principal/ Director of Special Education; Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Services, Director of Technology, Data Coordination, .65 CSE Chair, and a School Psychologist Intern. The recommendation called for the part-time Athletic Director/part-time Middle School Principal to remain as currently configured.


Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra visits Akron Falls Park

Many enjoyed a beautiful summer evening filled with music as they attended the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra concert at the Akron Sports Complex in Akron Falls Park on Saturday.

Newstead Historical Society Update - Pies needed for band concert tomorrow

The Newstead Historical Society will host the concession stand for the Friday, August 5 Community Band Concert and is looking for pie bakers! The Society does truly depend on our terrific bakers for these summer fundraisers and the pies are truly appreciated as are the hands of those who bake them! Please drop off your pie to the stand by 6:30 p.m. so our board members who manning the stand can get them cut and ready for hungry concert-goers! Many thanks in advance to our bakers for this sale and many thanks to those who baked for the Society’s July 4 sale, too.


Newstead resident arrested for DWI

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports the arrest of a Newstead resident for Felony Driving While Intoxicated by Sheriff’s Road Patrols early Sunday morning.


People to People Ambassadors return to Akron

Four Akron Central middle school students spent 19 days traveling through Ireland, Wales, England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands with People to People this summer.


Rec. Department hosts Annual Olympics

This week, the Newstead Recreation Department hosts it Fourth Annual Olympic Celebration including events and activities in Track and Field, Swimming, and Arts and Crafts… related to the theme. Next week’s highlights include a “Help Can Hunger!” Food Drive to benefit a local pantry serving our immediate community and the last field trip of the Summer to Darien Lake.
