AROUND TOWN – Bees enjoyed the blossoms and Akron Fire Company members trained on their newest ladder truck this week.


Akron Fire Company holds 89th Installation

As the Akron Fire Company gathered to celebrate their 89th Annual Installation of Officers they called upon Chaplain David Wickins for the invocation and paused to remember members who passed during the last year, ringing the company’s bell as each name was read. Remembered were: Jean Lotz, wife of Past Chief Terry Lotz, Jean Keller, wife of Past Chief Ken Keller, Harold Bruning, Honorary Member, Lewis Rohloff, Exempt Member, Dale Perry, Exempt Member and past Assistant Chief, Joseph Capan, Active Life Member, Richard Litfin, Active Life Member and Past Chief.


New exhibit – ‘Taverns and Churches … or Brews & Pews’ opens this weekend

Lumping both church and tavern history into one exhibit might seem almost sinful to some, but the Newstead Historical Society’s pairing at the new exhibit opening at the Knight-Sutton Museum is a natural – after all, a church and a tavern were the first meeting places back in the times when the Akron-Newstead area was first settled.


Akron students gain much from National History Day, three selected for state competition

Eighth grade social studies students at Akron Central have worked this school year to develop a National History Day project under the direction of social studies teacher Daric Brege.


Buffalo News Kids Day a great success!

On the 20th we covered all of Akron and Newstead and a small portion of Clarence with the Brothers of Akron Masonic Lodge #527, along with the Boy’s and Girls of Regina Juhre who also covered Akron Central School like a blanket. Over $200.00 worth! The Lodge turned in $1023.00 for their morning walk. Great effort by the Lodge and a generous effort by Akron - Newstead residents.


Cheerleading plan expected to repeat in 2012-13

A plan that allowed private donations to fund the 2011-2012 cheerleading squad is expected to be approved again for the next school year.

Failure to renew dog licenses comes with a price

In action Monday night, Newstead Town Board members adopted a local law doubling licensing fees when owners fail to renew their dog’s license. They also received a proposed Local Law which will amend the zoning classification of a parcel of land on Stage Road to change the zoning classification from R-A to I-2 to allow for allowable uses on the property not allowed in the present R-A zoning classification with certain conditions.


Nine Akron students inducted into National Technical Honor Society

Principal John Wodjeski of the Erie 1 BOCES Harkness Career and Technical Center recently announced the induction of nine Akron High School students into the National Technical Honor Society during a ceremony held on March 15, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Maryvale High School.
