We began our annual assault on the backyard garden on Sunday, and although our plot is small, it made me think of one of the best-known experts on the topic, almost 10 years after he and his wife made their final radio broadcast. George "Doc" Abraham was 89 when he passed away on Jan. 27, 2005. His wife, Katy, died four months later.

Akron Central names Athlete of the Week

This week’s girls Akron Central Athlete of the Week is Gina Henley. Gina is a sophomore on the Varsity Girls Track team. She competed at the Niagara-Orleans All-League Championship last week running her fastest time all season in the 400 Hurdles for first place, making her the 2012 All-League champ in that event. Her time of 1:10.41 has qualified her provisionally for the Section VI Championship.

Akron Chamber Awards 2012

The Akron Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year: Deposit Depot was recognized earlier this month at the annual awards banquet. Recognized were owners Jeff Cheavacci, Tom Smart, Craig Nice pictured with Jeannine Morlacci. Also recognized was Organization of the Year: Tonawanda Indian Baptist Church & High Point, led by Pastor Robert Dean pictured with Jeannine Morlacci.

Balloon Festival planned this weekend

Thirty-one hot air balloons will launch from Archery Field Overlook and float into the canyons of Letchworth State Park during the Red, White and Blue Balloon Festival Friday through Monday. This year’s special shape balloon, “Gus G. Guppy,” will join the myriad of other balloons as they ride the winds over Letchworth.

Election of second Board of Education member announced

The election of a second Akron Central School Board of Education member was announced this morning. Mrs. Roxanne Rebmann, District Clerk of Akron Central Schools, announced that Mr. William Murty will become the new trustee on the school’s Board of Education, filling one of two seats on the ballot on May 15, 2012.

Exceptional year in Akron Central School Art recognized

Exceptional Akron High School art students were recognized for their efforts at the District-Wide Art Show last Tuesday. Many high school students entered into and placed at art competitions throughout the school year. The art show also featured hundreds of pieces from students of all grade levels.

From Senator Ranzenhofer’s desk - reforming pension system protects taxpayers

Back in March, during the middle of the budget process, the State Senate – working together with the Governor and State Assembly – passed a major pension reform bill. As a result of the creation of a new Tier VI pension plan, State and local governments can expect to save $80 billion over thirty years. While I would have liked to see the reform measures go a step further, $80 billion in savings to the taxpayer is better than none.


Allstate agent, Herm Clouse was awarded the Allstate Foundation Hands in the Community Grant for his volunteer service to Bedford’s Greenhouse “Plant for Hope” fundraiser to benefit Roswell Park Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Resource Center.

The Akron Lady Tigers track team competed in the Niagara-Orleans All-League meet in Roy-Hart several days last week. The girls had some strong performances, highlighted by Gina Henley winning the league championship in the 400m hurdles.

Parents asked to calendar NYS testing schedule for 2012-2013

In an effort to help parents plan for the upcoming 2012-13 school year, Akron Central School Director of Curriculum and Instruction Mr. Anthony Panella has announced the state testing schedule as instituted by the New York State Education Department.

Sheriff’s Office enforcing seatbelt requirements

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office has agreed to participate in a statewide seatbelt enforcement movement that will run from May 21 until June 3. This heightening of safety will encourage motorists to buckle their safety belts or face receiving a ticket. Properly secured children will be a priority for the Sheriff’s Office during this enforcement effort.

Village asks Chamber to delay Cruise Nite start

Following the receipt of information that John Street construction may continue through June 8, the Village of Akron has requested the Akron Chamber of Commerce to delay or move their weekly Thursday Cruise Nites.

Young Tigers finish even in N-O play

A three game winning streak in the season’s last week helped the Akron Tigers even their record at 7-7 and earn a fourth place finish in the Niagara-Orleans Baseball League. Highlighting the Tigers surge was a pair of wins over Wilson on May 15. Mitchell Schultz’s eighth inning RBI single plated Cody Sturmer with the winning run in the first game of the day, a continuation of a game suspended by rain at Wilson on April 30.
