Akron Central High School Honor students recognized

The following students were honored for maintaining a 90 or above average for each of the first three marking periods of the 2011-12 school year at the Akron Scholastic Recognition Dinner last Thursday. Asterisks indicate that the student maintained a high honor average for each of the three marking periods. Plus signs indicate that the student maintained an overall high honor average for four years.


Akron Central Spring Scholar athletes announced

Ten Akron seniors have earned Scholar Athlete All Western New York by Section VI of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. This designation is reserved for seniors with an overall grade point average of 90 or above for six semesters who are starters or important reserves on their respective athletic teams.


Akron Middle School students honored as Math/Science Scholars

Several Akron Middle School sixth grade students were nominated by their science and math teachers for the inaugural cohort of the Math Science Preparatory Program at Genesee Community College.


Akron graduate releases new book

Award-winning author Laura (Kidder) Reese, a 1986 graduate of Akron Central, (writing under the pen name Lauren Clark) has launched her new book, Dancing Naked in Dixie. Clark weaves a tale of mystery and love as readers accompany the protagonist Julia, a travel-writer from New York, on a journey to the ‘Heart of Dixie’—Eufaula, Alabama—home to magnificent mansions, sweet tea, and the annual Pilgrimage.


Rushok and Henley headed to State Track Championships

The 2012 track and field season is not quite over for two Akron boys. Senior 1600-meter runner Jeremy Rushok and junior triple jumper Louis Henley won their events at the Section 6 Track and Field Championships this past weekend to advance to the NYS Championships at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Friday and Saturday.

Children invited to Young Eagles Flight Rally

The Experimental Aircraft Association will offer free airplane rides as they host a Young Eagles Flight Rally for children ages eight to 17 at the Lancaster Airport Saturday at 9 a.m. The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation. Since the program was launched in 1992, volunteer EAA pilots have flown more than 1.7 million young people who reside in more than 90 countries.

Loss to Rams ends Tigers Year

The season ended as it began for the Akron Tigers with a loss to Niagara-Orleans Baseball League rival Roy-Hart. The Akron Tigers lost in the Section VI Class B-1 quarterfinal playoff round at Gasport on May 22. The Tigers, who dropped both regular season contests to the Rams, including their season opener March 29, saw Roy-Hart break open a tight game with a seven run fifth inning and cruise to a 11-2 decision.

Valid information on hydrofracking emerges on the Internet

A few weeks ago, WPX Energy drilled more than a mile below the surface of the earth in Susquehanna, Pa., in search of natural gas. A deposit was reached through hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracking, a process as controversial as it is complex.


Village approves 2012-13 Akron Fire Company contract

After Village Attorney Don Shonn and Akron Fire Chief Dan Kowalik made minor changes to “grammar and verbage,” the Village of Akron approved the Akron Fire Company’s contract for the upcoming calendar year.
