Holiday Wrestling Tournament held at ACS

The 45th Annual Akron Central School Holiday Wrestling Tournament was held Friday and Saturday, December 28 and 29, 2012.


Hounds, miniature pinscher looking for good homes

Open Arms Rescue of WNY just had some very special hounds come in from George Washington University. These beautiful girls were used in endoscopy research. Each one is very sweet and loving. Please help us give these girls a fresh start in the new year with a loving family and forever home.

Akron Central begins 25th year of Scholastic Bowl competition at GCC

Akron Central School students will begin their 25th year of Scholastic Bowl Competition at Genesee Community College this month as the college hosts the start of the 2013 Scholastic Bowl Competition on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at the college’s television studio, One College Road, Batavia. Eleven teams from area high schools including Akron, Pembroke, Alexander, Oakfield, Attica, Alden, Notre Dame, Byron-Bergen, Elba, Batavia and Pavilion, will compete in this year’s league, celebrating twenty-five years of competition at the college.

Erie County Sheriff's Patrol were handling a call near the Transit Town Plaza, Transit Road, Clarence, at approximately 9 p.m. on December 30, 2012 when they encountered a 38-year-old female of Barnum Road, Akron.

Dates set for Kindergarten registration at Akron Central

The Akron Central School District has announced dates for Kindergarten Registration for the 2013-2014 school year. Parents of children born between December 2, 2007 and December 1, 2008 are reminded that it is time to register their child for Kindergarten. Dates for registration include the week of January 28 through February 1, 2013 and Tuesday through Friday, February 5 through 8, 2013.

Epitaphs for slain firefighters written by complete strangers

West Webster residents will continue to mourn the loss of two volunteer firefighters long after the formal period of mourning has come to a close. Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were killed on Christmas Eve when a convicted murderer set his house on fire and ambushed them as they arrived to do their duty. On average, 100 American firefighters die in the line of duty each year. They are almost never shot and killed in cold blood. That's why the West Webster tragedy is so difficult to accept and impossible to understand.

A Public Hearing is planned on January 14, 2013 at 7:50 p.m. in the Newstead Town Hall, 5 Clarence Center Road, on a proposed Sex Offender Law in the Town of Newstead.

Local Masons achieve milestone

The Akron Masonic Lodge will celebrate its 150th anniversary during 2013, and the Lodge will begin to commemorate its founding by presenting an information session about the history and traditions of Free and Accepted Masonry.


New recycling bins set for delivery, schedule begins January 18

Delivery of the new 65 gallon recycling carts for Akron and Newstead residents is expected to begin the week of January 7. Refuse collection in both Akron and Newstead is on Friday beginning in January, a change for Town of Newstead residents. Recyclable pick-up in the new carts begins on Friday, January 18 for those on the Week A schedule and on January 25 for those on the Week B schedule. Maps of the areas in the A and B schedules are in a newsletter mailed to residents last month.


New Time Life Records release from Ramblin’ Lou concert

Time Life Records recently released the newest CD by Hank Williams Sr., entitled “Lost Concerts.” The album features Hank Williams Sr., performing at Ramblin’ Lou’s big show in Niagara Falls, New York, on May 5, 1952.

Second opportunity offered for required parent attendance at Alcohol and Drug Awareness presentation

Parents who haven’t made it to an Alcohol and Drug Awareness presentation at Akron Central School and who have a student or students planning to attend an ACS dance, semi-formal or prom have another opportunity to attend. A presentation is set for Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Edward Allen Auditorium of Akron Central Schools, 47 Bloomingdale Avenue, Akron. Attendance is required for a parent of any student who wants to attend an ACS dance, semi-formal or prom. This is a repeat of the presentation made in November; a parent need only attend one of the two presentations. The January 9 presentation is the only remaining presentation to be made before the scheduled semi-formal or prom.

Town ‘Special Events’ law passes 3-2

A Local Law regulating Special Events in the Town of Newstead passed 3 to 2 during a Town Board meeting on December 27. The purpose of the law is to amend the Zoning Law to add a provision regulating special events within the Town of Newstead to provide for public safety by requiring adequate parking and security, requiring adequate bathroom facilities, providing limits to noise allowed and regulating the hours of such special events.


Warning issued regarding plowing of snow onto public roadway

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports that the Erie County Division of Highways has contacted the Sheriff’s Office regarding snow being plowed onto or across a public roadway.


Wrestling Wall of Fame Class of 2012 inducted

During the Varsity Tourney on December 29, there was a special ceremony to induct new members to the Akron Wrestling Wall of Fame. This year’s three inductees include Bill Freeman of the Class of 1968, Robert Cummings of the Class of 1990, and Daric Brege of the Class of 1992. Former ACS coach, Mr. Jerry Drayer, was on hand to present all three new inductees. Mr. Drayer also presented the “Jerry Drayer Most Outstanding Wrestler Award” of this year’s Akron Holiday Wrestling Tournament.
