Open Arms Rescue of WNY just had some very special hounds come in from George Washington University. These beautiful girls were used in endoscopy research. Each one is very sweet and loving. Please help us give these girls a fresh start in the new year with a loving family and forever home.
COMMUNITY PARTY - The Akron Celebration Committee successfully helped the greater Akron community ring in 2013 in style with their annual Ball Drop on New Year's Eve. Many gathered on Main Street and in Russell Park to enjoy time together and to help count down to the end of 2012.
Akron Central School students will begin their 25th year of Scholastic Bowl Competition at Genesee Community College this month as the college hosts the start of the 2013 Scholastic Bowl Competition on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at the college’s television studio, One College Road, Batavia. Eleven teams from area high schools including Akron, Pembroke, Alexander, Oakfield, Attica, Alden, Notre Dame, Byron-Bergen, Elba, Batavia and Pavilion, will compete in this year’s league, celebrating twenty-five years of competition at the college.

The Akron Central School District has announced dates for Kindergarten Registration for the 2013-2014 school year. Parents of children born between December 2, 2007 and December 1, 2008 are reminded that it is time to register their child for Kindergarten.

Delivery of the new 65 gallon recycling carts for Akron and Newstead residents is expected to begin the week of January 7.
Refuse collection in both Akron and Newstead is on Friday beginning in January, a change for Town of Newstead residents.

A presentation is set for Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Edward Allen Auditorium of Akron Central Schools, 47 Bloomingdale Avenue, Akron. Attendance is required for a parent of any student who wants to attend an ACS dance, semi-formal or prom. This is a repeat of the presentation made in November; a parent need only attend one of the two presentations. The January 9 presentation is the only remaining presentation to be made before the scheduled semi-formal or prom.
PLEASE TAKE NOTICE, that there has been presented to the Town Board on December 27, 2012, for adoption a proposed Local Law to be known as “Local Law No. 1 of the Year 2013" entitled “Sex Offender Law of the Town of Newstead”
A Local Law regulating Special Events in the Town of Newstead passed 3 to 2 during a Town Board meeting on December 27.
The purpose of the law is to amend the Zoning Law to add a provision regulating special events within the Town of Newstead to provide for public safety by requiring adequate parking and security, requiring adequate bathroom facilities, providing limits to noise allowed and regulating the hours of such special events.
During the Varsity Tourney on December 29, there was a special ceremony to induct new members to the Akron Wrestling Wall of Fame. This year’s three inductees include Bill Freeman of the Class of 1968, Robert Cummings of the Class of 1990, and Daric Brege of the Class of 1992. Former ACS coach, Mr. Jerry Drayer, was on hand to present all three new inductees. Mr. Drayer also presented the “Jerry Drayer Most Outstanding Wrestler Award” of this year’s Akron Holiday Wrestling Tournament.
