Akron Airport hosts ACS Kindergarten field trip

Five kindergarten classes from Akron Central School visited the Akron Airport on a field trip on Wednesday, June 12. The five classes included 108 kindergarten students who were accompanied by their teachers, Jen Klodzinski, Deb Hamm, Adrianne Braunscheidel, Karen Stachowiak, Marlene Gehl, and Marla Grefrath, teacher aide Diane Kowalik, and 15 parent chaperones. The students, teachers and parents all enjoyed a beautiful day for their walk from the school to the airport and back.

Akron’s top 10 seniors have ‘Go big or go home’ attitude

One of the biggest classes to graduate from Akron Central High School in many years crossed the stage of the Edward Allen Auditorium on Friday night, June 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Among the graduates are the Class of 2013’s Top Ten – those who, academically, have made it big. Profiled in no particular order is this year’s Top 10 Seniors, who outside of the classroom have each embraced the “Go Big or Go Home” attitude, making the most of whatever they’ve done.

Car seat inspections set

Sheriff Timothy B. Howard has announced some free car seat safety inspections in Erie County. At each event, certified road patrol deputies will teach child caregivers and parents the basics of correct car seat selection, correct use, and proper installation of the seats. These events are open to the public. Please note that car seat inspections can take up to 30 minutes

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office responded to 51 calls from June 10 to June 16. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents in Akron and Newstead.

Girl Scout Troop request for 5K approved by Akron Village Board

Members of Akron Junior Girl Scout Troop 30620 appeared before members of the Akron Village Board Monday night to request permission to hold a 5K Run/Walk on Village streets in October. No one appeared for a public hearing on the extension of the village contract with Akron Fire Company for six months. Following a discussion regarding compost and wood chip supplies at the Joint Public Works Facility on Clarence Center Road, Village Board members adopted a resolution to allow Town of Newstead residents to access that resource for a permit fee.

Registration in full swing for Summer Recreation

Registration for the Town of Newstead Summer 2013 Recreation Program which runs from July 8 through August 16 started June 10 and over 150 participants have been successfully registered to date.

Senator Ranzenhofer calls for cutting red tape that hurts job creation

The only state to be ranked as having a worse business climate was California. More specifically, when rating the Empire State on its taxes and regulations, New York yielded only one star, out of a possible five star ranking.

Sheriff Deputy arrests Akron man for DWI

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports an Akron man was one of two area drivers arrested for Driving While Intoxicated on Saturday night in separate incidents by Sheriff’s Road Patrols.

Village of Akron adopts Smoke Free resolution

All property owned by the Village of Akron is smoke-free following a resolution passed by the Akron Village Board during their June 17 meeting which took effect immediately. Following discussion at both June Village Board meetings, of a proposal by the Erie Niagara Tobacco Free Coalition and the American Cancer Society, the Board designated all village property, including Russell Park and Wilder Park as 100 percent smoke free.
