Russell Park Summer luncheon series kicks off

RUSSELL PARK SUMMER LUNCHEON SERIES – kicks off today, Thursday, July 11 with The Bobby Militello Quartet at noon. Bobby is a world renowned musician who has toured with such greats as Maynard Fergusen and Dave Brubeck. Akron’s own Laurie Bordonaro will perform with her husband Ben Mozée on tenor sax, along with Michael T. Jones (piano), Sabu Adeyola (bass) and Danny Hull (drums) on July 28.

Caprio re-elected Akron Central School Board president

Dan Caprio was elected for another term as President of the Akron Central School Board of Education when the board reorganized on July 2, 2013. Mr. Caprio is in his third term on the board as he begins his ninth year of service. Phil Kenline, who started his second term on the Board at the re-organizational meeting, was elected Vice-President. Election of new officers followed administration of the oath of office to Board members elected in May of this year, Shannon Cinotti (first term) and Phillip Kenline and David Penn (second terms). District Clerk Roxanne Rebmann served as temporary chairman until elections were completed.

First US Park Golf course opens with flourish locally

In keeping with its family oriented focus, the first Park Golf course in the United States opened on Sunday in the Town of Newstead with many families in attendance.

Fourth of July Parades beat the rain drops

Akron Fourth of July activities dodged most of the rain drops last week and both parades stepped off without the need for umbrellas. Fireworks went off as planned Wednesday night, sandwiched between bursts of rain. TIBC sponsored the fireworks and sponsored free refreshments and games at the Newstead Veterans Park prior to the display.

5K benefits community projects

RUNNING FOR COMMUNITY – 136 runners came out for the 5K Independence Run sponsored by the Akron-Newstead Lions and Rotary Club to raise funds for community projects

RESCUE – Akron Fire Company personnel rescued a 46-year-old Niagara Falls woman who fell into the lower level of Akron Falls Park last week.

The use of Global Positioning System devices to provide turn by turn directions to motorists has grown far beyond what anyone could have imagined a generation ago. That technology has trickled down into smartphones, leading some skeptics to pronounce the paper map as dead on arrival. Well, not yet.

Summer Recreation off to a Swinging Success

The Town of Newstead Summer 2013 Recreation Programs started this past week with Golf as “Sport of the Week.” More than 200 participants engaged in a variety of programs to date. The AM Session is now full for all grade sections. However, there is still room in the PM Session for some grade sections; but do not delay, as they too may soon be filled to capacity. In addition to the AM and PM Sessions, the following programs are offered with the corresponding fees that will apply for the Summer of 2013.
