ACS Saxophonist selected for National Honor Ensemble

Before 670 of the nation’s most elite high school musicians applied to perform as part of the National Association for Music Education’s (NAFME) All-National Honor Ensembles, they were first named the ‘best of the best’ out of approximately 2.5 million students nationwide at local, district and state music festivals. On October 30, Akron High School senior baritone saxophonist Nathan Bryk, will be one of the 670 exceptional young musicians gathered during the 2013 NAfME National In-Service Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, to showcase their expert musicianship.


Varsity Football team finishes regular season with impressive win over Newfane

The Akron Tigers Varsity Football team finished the 2013 regular season with a 36 to 8 win over Newfane. The Tigers ended the regular season with a record of 5-1 in the league and 5-2 overall.

everal candidates are on the November 5 ballot seeking Town of Newstead offices. Incumbent Town Clerk Dawn Izydorczak is seeking election unopposed. Incumbent Highway Superintendent Michael Bassanello is being challenged by John Jendrowski; Incumbent Town Justice Dennis Freeman is being challenged by former Town Councilwoman Cheryl Esposito. Incumbent Town Councilmen Richard Baran and Jim Mayrose as well as Eric Polkowski and Marybeth Whiting are all seeking one of the two Town Councilperson positions. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes are elected to the Councilperson seats. The AKRON BUGLE gave each candidate the opportunity to answer three questions for publication prior to the election. The questions and their answers follow:

Lady Tigers Cross Country team now 7 and 0

Akron Central ladies cross country team beat Barker on Tuesday 16-47. This meet finishes the ladies league season the only race left is the All League championship, which takes place on October 26 at Lakeside Beach State Park.


Lady Tigers Cross Country team takes second at Clarence Invite

This week the Lady Tigers raced at the Clarence Invitational and came home with a second place finish. The loss came from a larger Section V school. Huge highlights were Eliza Papke taking first in the race after not being able to see the flags/markings on the course due to mud, and having to sprint the last 300 meters.


Little League Varsity team goes 9-0 with win in Alexander

After a three week layoff, the 2013 NOFA Akron Varsity Tigers were chomping at the bit to be unleashed onto another team. The Tigers last played on September 28 and due to the schedule makers finally hit the field again on Saturday, October 19 at Alexander High School. The Tigers defeated the Tri-Town Trojans 32 – 0 and improved their record to 9 – 0 with one regular season game remaining on their schedule.

NYSSMA Music Festival comes to Akron Central

Musicians from fifty-five school districts representing the four counties of Western New York will descend upon Akron Central School as it hosts the 2013 New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) Junior High Area All State Music Festival on November 1 and 2.

A Staff Meeting for new and returning Program Coordinators, Program Attendants, Lifeguards, Swim Instructors and Volunteers will be held this evening, October 24 at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the Denio Building (old library). Registration for Fall 2013 Programs offered by the Town of Newstead Recreation Department started this past Monday, October 21 at the Town Clerk’s Office. The multitude of programs provides a broad range of services to address various demographics and stakeholders in the community.
