Akron Central names Athletes of the Week

This week’s female Athlete of the Week at Akron Schools is Madison Harris, an eighth grader on the Varsity Girls Swim team. Sophomore Drew Butler is this week's male Athlete of the Week.

Newstead Fire Company presents awards

Newstead Fire Company presented a number of awards during their installation dinner in December 20-14.

Lab/Beagle and Border Collie/Boxer mix up for adoption

Pets of the Week: Odin is an 11 week old lab/beagle mix who was surrendered locally. Odin is very sweet and smart and Angel is approximately 9 weeks old. She is a beautiful Border Collie/Boxer mix and would be a perfect addition to any family.

Hearts and Hands receives award, Founder recognized

Service to Town recognized

Town of Newstead Supervisor David L. Cummings recognized Planning Board Chairman Corky Keppler for 25 years of service to the Town of Newstead during the annual Safety Meeting last month.

Child Find process helps refer students with disabilities

Child Find is a continuous process of public awareness activities, screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and refer as early as possible young children with disabilities and their families who are in need of an Early Intervention Program or Pre-school Special Education services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Membership renewals due for Akron/Newstead Senior Citizens

Some of the programs at the Akron/Newstead Senior Center, 5691 Cummings Rd., Akron, NY are open to all Seniors in the Town of Newstead, such as the daily lunches, outreach programs, and some trips. Others are offered only to members of Akron/Newstead Senior Citizens Inc. All 2014 ANSC memberships expired on December 31 and to renew or join, 2015 dues of ten dollars per person need to be submitted to the Akron/Newstead Senior Center, 5691 Cummings Rd. Membership includes participation in several programs, activities, and events at the Center as well as covers the cost of printing and mailing the newsletter to members’ homes each month. For more information on the benefits of membership or on how to renew or join contact the Senior Center at 542-6645.

New year will overflow with significant anniversaries

The new year is upon us and rather than utter some bold personal pronouncements and resolutions with only a slim chance of being honored, I'd prefer to spotlight some sure bets for 2015.

Veterans encourage Board to consider opting in exemptions

Veterans appeared before the Akron Central School Board of Education during their December 17 meeting to encourage the Board’s continued consideration of opting in on a new tax law which allows veterans an exemption on a portion of their properties for school district tax purposes.

Vocalists invited to open audition

ABC Bel Canto Choirs will hold an open rehearsal on Thursday, January 8. ABC Bel Canto Choirs are made up of wonderful choristers from all over western New York. They are a tuition based choir, independent of any church, school or municipality. Over 35 different schools send students to sing.
