Competing for a cause

Cindy Tretter and Laurie Mozee were among those competing for a cause as “The Destroyer” took on the role of referee at Saturday’s Sumo Wrestling event at Akron Central School.

Boards challenged to consolidate services

The Newstead Republican Committee 2004 Lincoln Leadership Award recipient, Thomas C. Perry, challenged the Newstead Town Board and Village of Akron Board to consolidate services following his acceptance of the award last Saturday.

Davis for Congress

Town of Newstead businessman Jack Davis announced his candidacy for Congress during an Open House at I Squared R Element Company, Inc., Clarence Center Road, on March 18. “I am on a mission to Save American Manufacturing,” Mr. Davis said.

Critical Condition

An 80 year old Akron man remains in critical but stable condition at ECMC after an accident on Buell Street Wednesday, March 17.

Flynn named Civil Deputy of the Year

Town of Newstead resident, Erie County Sheriff’s Chief Patrick Flynn was recently named the New York State Sheriff’s Association’s winner of the 2004 Civil Deputy of the Year Award. With this announcement, Chief Flynn becomes the first two-time winner of this statewide honor. Erie County Sheriff Patrick Gallivan nominated him.

Akron Village Board members heard a presentation on a proposed patio homes community on Clarence Center and Hake Roads during their March 15 meeting.

The Village of Akron has released a new recycling brochure to update residents on recycling services and responsibilities as a new season of compost services is set to begin.
