Fresh paint

The Newstead Community Building (former Denio Memorial Library) recently received a new roof, soffits and windows, as well as reconstructed front and rear entrances and a fresh coat of paint. Town of Newstead Supervisor Jerry Summe reports the roof was funded through the Town roof replacement budget line and the other work was made possible through a Pest Management Control grant offered through the Department of Environmental Control.


Lofty job

Painters have a lofty view of the Village of Akron this week as they put a fresh coat of paint on the steeple of Akron First United Methodist church on Main Street. All are welcome to stop in this Sunday morning for the 8:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. worship services for a view of Paulís letter to the Ephesians.


Newstead Public Library reports significant increase in usage

The Newstead Public Library experienced one of its busiest Junes on record, Director Kristine Sutton recently reported.


Practicing firefighting skills

Newstead Fire Company members used a request to burn down a house on Havens Road to hone firefighting skills early Saturday morning. They are often called upon to help remove unsafe buildings and use those requests as opportunities to train firefighters in controlled, realistic settings.


Contractor on notice - fields must be complete August 6

The Akron Central School District recently put the contractor constructing their new athletic fields on notice that work must be completed by August 6.
