HOPE lived out at Akron Relay for Life

Words and actions of hope surrounded last Saturday’s Akron Relay for Life at the Akron Central School track. Many teams came to walk in celebration of survivors, some for those currently fighting cancer and others in memory of those who have finished the fight. Luminaries lined the track as darkness fell, each one having the names of those impacted by cancer in some way, and a solemn and meaningful ceremony concluded twelve hours of walking to raise funds to help find a cure.

Akron 9U Travel celebrates on Father’s Day

The Akron 9U Travel baseball team helped make Father’s Day extra special this year by winning two outstanding playoff games on Sunday. The two wins place Akron into the Championship game next Sunday.

Akron Central to stream live video of graduation ceremony

Akron Central School will stream live video of the Class of 2011 graduation ceremony scheduled for Friday, June 24, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. The ceremony takes place at the Edward Allen Auditorium on the school’s campus at 47 Bloomingdale Avenue, Akron.

The Akron Community Band, which has played concerts in Russell Park, Main Street, Akron, New York continuously since 1923, opens their 89th season in Akron on July 1.

Akron youth participates in State Skeet and Trap championships

Six members of Lockport’s North Forest Rod & Guns Club youth shotgun team, including one Akron, NY youth, placed at the New York State Skeet & Trap Scholastic Clays Target Program (SCTP) State Championships held at Dewitt Fish & Game in Syracuse, New York on Sunday June 12.

Family programs planned at Newstead Public Library

July will bring a number of Family Programs to the Newstead Public Library, Main Street, Akron, NY. Perry Ground - Native American Storyteller will share tales on Wednesday, July 13 at 2 p.m.

Grandchildren, nieces, nephews invited to a movie

A “Grand Day” is planned on Tuesday, June 28 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. with a special lunch and movie event for grandparents and grandchildren ( or nieces, nephews, etc.). This and other Senior Citizen activities at the Newstead Senior Center follow.

No Fishing License required this Saturday and Sunday

The Red, White, and Blue is theme for Fourth of July celebration

“The Red, White, and Blue” is the theme for the 2011 Akron Fourth of July Celebration. The Akron Celebration Committee, with the help of the Akron Chamber of Commerce, Highpoint Church, Town of Newstead and Village of Akron, have pulled together two days of food, fun, and entertainment, including a special Akron Community Band concert, gala parade, and fireworks.

Village Board receives Fourth of July street closing request

Requests for street closings to accommodate this year’s Akron Celebration Committee’s Fourth of July festivities were received by the Akron Village Board Monday night and passed along to the Akron Police Department for implementation. Other discussions and action included EMS contract change, reduction of sludge hauling, Village Court, 30MPH, ideas for development of Village property near electric substation, joint meeting with Newstead Town Board, Joint Public Works Facility, and permits.
