Fall Sports registration is open at ACS
Akron Central High School and Middle School have announced the opening of sports registration for the Fall 2023 sports season. Parents of Akron High School or Middle School student athletes participating in a fall sport at any level, including modified, will need to register their child on the school’s registration platform, FamilyID, at www.akronschools.org/FamilyID. Registration is currently open for those wishing to participate in varsity, junior varsity and modified cross-country, field hockey and volleyball; varsity and JV football, boys soccer and girls soccer, varsity cheerleading and golf.

4th of July Celebration schedule set
Fourth of July in Akron this year will feature celebrating the Town of Newstead’s Bicentennial with an entire week of activities along with the Akron Celebration Committee’s annual events. Highlights of the activities scheduled, include fireworks at dusk at Veterans Park, Buell Street on July 3. July 4th kicks off with a Power Wheels race beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by the popular Soapbox Derby at 11:00 a.m. Register is day of the race in Russell Park. West Shore Market moves to Veterans Park for Bicentennial
The West Shore Market will move to Veterans Park on Sunday, July 2 to be part of the tractor show exhibit in the Newstead Bicentennial Celebration. The Tractor show starts at 10, Market vendors will be there 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., some later. The market will return to Russell Park on Sunday, July 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The West Shore Market is hosted by the Akron Chamber of Commerce and occurs on Sundays from June through September. Memorial Ride to honor former Town of Newstead Supervisor David L. Cummings
A Memorial Ride with the Patriot Guard, Newstead Fire Company, friends, and family will honor David Larry Cummings, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 21, 2023. The ride begins at the Ross Funeral Home on Eckerson Avenue at 11:45 a.m. this Saturday, July 1 and will travel through the Village of Akron before ending at the Newstead Fire Hall, where there will be a reception.

Retired Supervisor David L. Cummings passes away
David L. Cummings, Town of Newstead Supervisor for over 21 years, one four-year term, and over 17 consecutive years prior to resigning early this year, passed away this week. Cummings also served as Town Councilman for fourteen and a half years during two separate series of terms, one year on the Town Zoning Board of Appeals, and one year on the Town of Newstead Recreation Board. He also served the community as a member of the Newstead Fire Company, Akron Jaycees, Akron Lions Club, Akron Celebration Committee (which he chaired for several years), and the Newstead Republican Committee.
