ACS notifies parents that someone recently present in the Elementary School tested positive for COVID-19

Akron Central School Superintendent Patrick D. McCabe notified parents on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 that an individual who was recently present in the Elementary school has tested positive for COVID-19.

McCabe posted the letter emphasizing that it is only and does not automatically mean that a child has been exposed to COVID-19 or come in close or proximate contact with the individual.

The County Departments of Health has been notified and will engage in contact tracing and notify impacted individuals. “Please be assured that we are working with them and are taking all recommended steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” McCabe wrote.

“Steps we are implementing in cooperation with Department of Health include: • Providing the Health Department with the names of people that may have come in close contact with the individual. • We will be working directly with any affected families to support them throughout this process. • The individual will not return to the District until they have completed isolation procedures for COVID-19 as directed by the Department of Health. • The areas used by the individual have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.”

McCabe said further updates will be issued if additional steps need to be taken by the District and asked parents to please continue monitoring children for symptoms and stay home if they are sick. “In addition, please contact their healthcare provider if they develop symptoms of COVID-19 or if you have any additional questions or concerns.”

District must comply with applicable privacy laws, rules, and regulations and is precluded from sharing certain information regarding this occurrence with the community and staff.
