Road work set to begin today in Village of Akron
Work on eleven Village of Akron streets is set to begin today, August 20. Westgate Ave, Shepard Ave, Sunset Blvd, Sunrise Blvd, Sylvan Pkwy, and Crescent Dr. will be micro-milled between August 20 and August 24, 2026 with paving set to begin on August 31, 2026. Stoneridge Ln, Flint St, Upper John St, Monroe St, and Colony Pl. are only scheduled for micro-paving. Westshore Market brings local vendors to Russell Park each week
By Anne Santor The Westshore Farmers Market brings a variety of local vendors and items to Russell Park every Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. alongside Cruise Night. The West Shore Farmers Market began in 2021 on Eckerson Ave. in the area where the West Shore railroad formerly ran and was held every Sunday. The location of the market on Eckerson did not bring in enough customers to retain vendors so the decision was made to move to Russell Park and continue on Sundays. The change did not adequately increase the customer base, so the Market moved to Thursday

Yes, there is an Akron Community Band concert tonight, July 17
Akron Community Band will present their Friday night concert in Russell Park beginning at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday, July 17. There are pies, brownies, hot dogs, and popcorn available in the refreshment stand. The concert includes a number of Children’s favorites including Aladdin, Pirates of the Caribbean, Superman, Guardians, The Teddy Bears picnic and more. Next Friday, July 24 is the annual Christmas in July concert and decoration contest. Those attending that concert may enter by decorating their space for Christmas by 6:30 p.m. Prizes, include a basket from Martin’s Mercantile, awarded at intermission. Car Show and West Shore Market canceled July 16
In an overabundance of caution for Akron-Newstead Chamber of Commerce members and the public, the Chamber has canceled the Car Show and the West Shore Farmers Market for tonight, July 16. This decision did not come easily and reflects the unhealthy air quality.

Village of Akron waterline break repaired
Village of Akron reports that the leak in Erie County Akron Falls Park has been repaired. All paused water services have been resumed. Discolored water is to be expected as pressure is restored to the distribution system. They thank everyone for their patience. The Village of Akron water department repaired a large water leak within the Erie County Akron Falls Park which occurred earlier in the day.

Commemorative 250 Coins offered at Museum tour
The Newstead Historical Society is giving Commemorative Coins to the first 100 people to take a tour of their museums on the Fourth of July. They invite everyone in the community to join them for any or all of their activities this weekend. A Gold Commemorative Coins will be given out at the Knight-Sutton Museum, 123 Main St. open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Fourth of July and the Silver coin is available at the Rich-Twinn Octagon House, 145 Main St. open from 2 to 4 p.m. The Rich-Twinn Octagon House will host Heritage Days on their

Gerstung scores 1,000th point
Tiger Varsity Basketball player, Benjamin Gerstung joined an elite group as he scored his 1,000th point at Wilson on January 21. Only four other players in Akron Basketball have achieved that milestone.

Students honored on the President’s List have maintained full-time enrollment and earned a quality point index of 3.75 (roughly equivalent to an A) or better. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Ross, beloved funeral director of Ross Funeral Home of Akron, who served the Akron community with dignity, compassion, and unwavering dedication for over ten years.
