State Police looking for public assistance in fraud investigation
The New York State Police – SP Clarence Bureau of Criminal Investigation have an ongoing fraudulent financial investigation where we are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying additional victims to a fraudulent financial activity. It is believed the fraudulent transactions are connected to purchases made at a fast-food establishment on Transit Road in the town of Clarence in between the dates of January 15, 2026 – April 10, 2026. SP Clarence Investigators urge individuals to carefully review their credit card and debit card statements to specifically look for any unauthorized or suspicious transactions listed under the business name of “Jays Creates”
Residents raise concerns during public hearing on tax cap override
Some Village of Akron residents appeared before the Village Board at their April 6 meeting with concerns over rising assessments, increased taxes, and their proposal to pass a local law allowing the tax levy relating to the 2026-2027 Village Budget to exceed the state tax levy cap.
Town and Village Boards voice support for ‘Read to Lead Program’
The Newstead Town Board and Akron Village Boards have adopted resolutions in support of the “Read to Lead” initiative developed by Akron Central School student Audrey Garverick and supported by the Akron Central School Board of Education.

Newstead Town Board approves egg processing facility site-plan
Newstead Town Board members determined a proposed egg processing facility on North Millgrove Road will not have a significant effect on the environment and issue a State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) Negative Declaration at their Board meeting Monday night.

Rebuild of Russell Park refreshment stand underway
Village of Akron DPW crews are currently (3/18/26) taking down the Russell Park refreshment stand in preparation for a new structure. All work is expected to be completed before the facility is needed for the events held each spring.

Gerstung scores 1,000th point
Tiger Varsity Basketball player, Benjamin Gerstung joined an elite group as he scored his 1,000th point at Wilson on January 21. Only four other players in Akron Basketball have achieved that milestone.

On the Campus 217 students from Genesee Community College were named to Spring 2025 President’s List. Students honored on the President’s List have maintained full-time enrollment and earned a quality point index of 3.75 (roughly equivalent to an A) or better. Hailey Martin, Hannah Martin, Sarah Kidder, Michael Meacham, Trey Kipfer and Kaylee Marble of Akron; Natalie Swarner, Aaron Wojtkowiak, and Valerie Infanti of Alden; and Farrah Macpherson and Alessandra Sage of Basom were among those students recognized. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Ross, beloved funeral director of Ross Funeral Home of Akron, who served the Akron community with dignity, compassion, and unwavering dedication for over ten years. Michael passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
