10-Digit Dialing set to begin in 716, and other Area Codes
The deadline for converting to using 10-digits for local calls in the 716 area code is drawing close. Beginning October 24, 2021, to complete any call, callers must use the area code and telephone number.
The Federal Communications Commission adopted 988 as a new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline beginning in July of this year and for 988 to work, 10-digit local dialing is required. That impacts a number of area codes across the country. It does not impact 585.
In addition to changing the way local calls are dialed, all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment that are programmed to complete calls to seven-digit local numbers will need to be reprogrammed to complete calls to 10-digit numbers.
Among those devices are fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, security systems, speed dialers, wireless and mobile phone contact lists, call forward settings, voicemail, and other functions relying on preprogrammed phone numbers.
An FCC notice of the change earlier this spring advises residents to check websites, personal and business stationery, advertising materials, personal and business checks, contact information, personal or pet lD tags, and other such items to ensure the area code is included.
Telephone numbers, including the current area code will not change. One plus the area code and the telephone number for all long-distance calls will remain as well.
Callers can still dial just three digits to reach 711 (relay services) and 911 (emergency services). If 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, or 811 are currently available in your community, continue to dial these codes with just 3 digits.
What will not change is your telephone number, including current area code; the price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services; local calls remain local calls regardless of the number of digits dialed; long distance calls continue to use: dial 1+ the area code + telephone number.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can still be reached by dialing 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
