ACS names Tiger Athletes of the Week

The Akron Tiger teams were hot last week resulting in two sizzlers selected for Tiger Athlete of the Week: Lauren Wagner of the track team and Caleb Suckow from the tennis team.

Wagner won two Niagara-Orleans League championship patches for the 800 meter and 1500 meter races at the championship meet held at Roy-Hart on June 9, 2021.

Lauren surprised the team’s rival, Newfane, by choosing not to run the 3000 and focusing on the 1500 and 800.  The nearest competitor in both events was from Newfane.

The team’s workhorse in the distance events, Lauren runs up to four events a meet, changing events with guidance from Coach Bob Kowalik from meet to meet to do what is best for the team.

“She has been very unselfish and has often stepped back from the limelight to give her teammates a chance at success and better prepare them for the championship portion at the season’s end,” said Coach Daric Brege.  “She could have been a triple or quadruple winner many times this year but looked at the bigger picture – the team picture – which is admirable.  Congratulations, Lauren, and good luck at Sectionals!”

Also selected Tiger Athlete of the Week is sophomore Caleb Suckow of the Niagara-Orleans League Champion tennis team.

Suckow qualified to play in the Section VI singles championship by defeating the N-O League’s #2 singles player in a challenge match last Sunday morning. His 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory earned him the opportunity to represent the N-O League in singles play, joining the league’s #1 player, teammate Will Chubb.  Caleb is undefeated in league play at second singles with a 132-25 record.

“Caleb’s victory over the league’s number two player was a demonstration of incredible athleticism and extraordinary shot-making! What he has accomplished in his first year competing in tennis is simply amazing,” added Coach Butler. “Well done, Caleb, and good luck in sectionals.”
