Akron Central names Athletes of the Week

Akron Central High School Tigers wrap up the winter sports season this week.  Selected Tiger Athletes of the Week are Sean O’Shaughnessy of the Tigersharks and Olivia Asmus of the cheerleading squad.

O’Shaughnessy is a senior team captain in his third year with the Tigersharks.  Last week, Sean competed in the Class C Championship swim meet hosted by Clarence.  Including preliminary heats, Sean finished with 7 best times out of 8 swims and placed Top 16 in all four events in which he competed. Sean swam the 50 Freestyle in 25.16 and swam the 100 Backstroke in 1:07.31.

He contributed to the 200 Medley Relay swimming backstroke and swam in the 400 Freestyle Relay for best times again, helping to qualify both relays for the Section 6 State Qualifier meet held on Tuesday, February 15 at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center on the Erie Community College City campus.

“Sean’s leadership and positive attitude has resonated through the team for three years,” remarked Coach Mark Fragale. “Great job, Sean!”

Sean is on the honor roll and attends Harkness Career and Technical Center for Electrical Systems.

Sophomore Olivia Asmus is an integral part of the ACS competition cheer squad.  Her main base position is often an overlooked position, but a vital one.  Olivia’s strength to hold, throw and catch her teammates helped the squad to earn Second place at the Niagara-Orleans League Championship hosted by Newfane on February 9th.

Olivia also contributed to the team’s Sixth place finish at the Iroquois Cheer Competition held February 2nd, and Second place in D2 Small Schools at the Orchard Park Cheer Challenge held back in January.

“Her dedication and commitment are stellar,” said Coach Bonnie James.  “She never complains about the multiple stunting repetitions and changes, she pushes through a full schedule of games or competitions and is always willing to step up when needed.  Although Olivia is quiet, she is a silent leader who gets the job done. Congratulations!”
