Akron Central names Athletes of the Week
For Tiger Athletics at Akron High School, only boys and girls basketball have sectional contests remaining to finish out the 2021-22 winter sport season. Selected Tiger Athletes of the Week are two basketeers from the girls varsity team.
Sophomore Ashlee Henning wears #44 for the Lady Tigers. She’s a power guard for the team with 122 rebounds this season, second in that stat for the girls. Ashlee has also recorded 13 blocks for the season.
“Ashlee uses her height to her advantage and uses it effectively,” commented Coach Anto Abrams. “She’s improved on her chip shots the last couple games, too. She is going to be an asset to our team for the next couple years. Good job, Ashlee, and keep up the good work!”
Also selected Tiger Athlete of the Week from the girls’ team is junior Melanie Holtz, wearing jersey #3. Another guard for the Tigers, Melanie is third in assists with 20 for the season and tied for second with 51 steals.
“Melanie helps take care of the ball effectively for offense,” said Coach Abrams. “She’s overcome some adversity during the season which has helped her to become a stronger player. Congratulations, Melanie!”
