Akron Fire Company holds 97th Annual Installation

Akron Fire Company held their 97th Installation of officers on Saturday, March 14.

Erie County Legislator Edward Rath III, installed the Firematic Officers: Chief Charles Haist, First Assistant Chief David Milks, Second Assistant Chief Samuel Villafranca, E.M.S. Captain Joseph Bergman, Fire Captain Joshua Haist, Warden Kenneth Pagels and Exempt Officers President Dale Cheavacci, Vice President Michael Brown, and Secretary/Treasurer Fred Pask.

Village of Akron Mayor Carl Patterson installed the Executive Officers: President Gary Baehr, Vice President Derek DeYoung, Secretary Steven Tedesco, Treasurer Kim Crump, Director Robert Wilkinson, Director Allyn George, Director Brandon Chase, and Member at Large Andrew DeYoung as well as the Ladies Auxiliary President Michelle Pask, Vice President Mallory Schoenwetter, Secretary Kelley Schoenwetter, Treasurer James Zazowski, and Sgt. At Arms Collette Pagels.

Years of Service awards were presented to Ryan Akin, Brandon Chase, Jason Ladd, Austin Ladd, 5 years; Andy DeYoung, Sam Villafranca, Allyn George, – 10 years, William Murray, Gary Baehr – 20 years, and Don Roth – 30 years.

Top Responders -David Milks (319), Jake Smith (317), Joe Bergman (301), Josh Haist (275), Charles Haist (271), Brian Bergman (271), Jason Ladd (232), Kenneth Pagels (171), Dominc Stutz (171), Brandon Chase (154).  There were 546 calls for 2019.

Jason Ladd, William Murray, Josh Haist were recognized as outgoing officers with appreciation for their service.

Signmatic Signs Joe and Linda Capan were recognized as Business of the Year for helping renovate the labeling in the Fire Prevention Training Trailer.

The Worker of the Year award was presented to Brandon Chase who took on many jobs during the year, handling each one well.

The Wesley Scott Award was presented to Jason Ladd as an Executive Officer who went above and beyond his delegated duties during 2019.

The Chiefs Award was presented to three: William Murray, David Milks, Chuck Haist, who Chief Josh Haist without whom he said he could not have done his job.

Rookie of the Year went to Steve Tedesco who was described as having the drive and passion you can teach and who contributed to both the Fir Police and Administrative work of the company.

Firefighter of the Year was given to Mike Daruzio.

Apparatus Operator of the Year was Jason Ladd who drove 92 times.

The Ladies Auxiliary thanked all their members and noted that again last year they gave a smoke detector to every kindergarten student at Akron Central, continuing to reach their goal of having at least one smoke detector in every home.  The Auxiliary presented Fire Prevention Officer Ken Pagels with a photo of a new 911 phone simulator they are purchasing to give students an opportunity to learn out to text or call in the event of an emergency. They also presented a fire extinguisher for fire safety instruction and presented a financial gift to the Fire Company.

Sterling McCarriagher was recognized for 15 years of service.  Ruth Folger and Mary McCloud were recognized with lifetime membership for 25 years of service.  Elain Frey was awarded the Sandra Murray Work of the Year Award for her willingness to always help when needed and Kathy Akin was awarded the Jessica Baehr Worker of the Year Award for her beyond what was asked service to the Auxiliary.
