Akron Tiger Boys Basketball team start 1-0
In game one of the season, senior Syras Jonathan led the Akron Tiger Basketball team to a great start earning game-high honors with 25 points on five three-pointers.
Derren Brooks (12) and Ben Gerstung (11) also scored double figures for the Tigers to beat Cleveland Hill 60-30 on the road. The score was 42-17 at halftime for a fast start that allowed all members of the team to get involved in the action. The Tigers recorded assists on 65% of their baskets, driving up their efficiency and demonstrating that sharing the ball and taking open shots would lead to team success.
First League win
In game two, junior Benjamin Gerstung led all players in scoring, putting in 18 points with 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Brayden Lamont (14), Blake Gerstung (12), and Derren Brooks (11) each tallied double-digits, too. The 69-38 win over the Albion Purple Eagles moved the Tigers to 1-0 in the Niagara Orleans League and set the tone moving forward. Aggressive defense and continued unselfish play produced assists on 60% of their field goals and allowed all players to get into the action. The Tigers hit a season-high of 12 three-point field goals.
Beat Barker Bulldogs
At home for game three, the Tigers enjoyed a 74-48 win over League opponent Barker Bulldogs, improving their overall to 3-0 and N-O League record to 2-0.
Blake Gerstung led the team with a game-high 24 points on 7 of 11 from three-point range. Blake also finished with 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Derren Brooks had 19 points and 9 rebounds and Benjamin Gerstung finished the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Tigers continued their strong defense, amassing 15 steals while continuing to share and shoot the ball (11 3pts.) This game moved the Tigers into an early lead in the N-O League standings and a way-too-early high seed for sectional playoffs.
Tigers move to 6-0
The Tigers traveled to Wilson for game six of the season and continued League play to close out 2024 6-0 overall and 3-0 League record.
Despite a slow first half with the Lakemen dictating a deliberate offense and solid zone defense, the half ended with the Tigers up 17-15. The Tigers’ offense sparked to life for the second half with Benjamin Gerstung scoring his game-high 23 points, all in the second half. Gerstung, making four threes and going 5/5 down the stretch, got help from Blake Gerstung who scored 10 points of his own, connecting on three threes.
Lamont led the team with 6 assists to amass 24 assists to only 3 turnovers on the season. Syras Jonathan led the team in rebounds while Derren Brooks collected another 3 blocks.
The Tigers will return to game action in 2025 with a home game on Friday, January 3, against the Medina Mustangs. Spectators are always welcome.
