Barbara A. Young
Barbara A. Young, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 12, 2022. She was born in Buffalo, New York on October 19, 1944 to the late George and Dorothy (Smith) Bower.
Barb was a life-long resident of Akron and graduated from Akron Central High School in 1962. She and her beloved husband of 46 years, the late Millard W. Young, were married on April 20, 1963.
She held many interests that kept her puttering. She loved holiday decorating, time at the lake, casino gambling, gardening, lunch with the ladies, crime shows, and most of all, her family traditions. She had an ear for gossip and a tongue for sarcasm. She was the least photogenic person you’ve ever met, but her beauty was her inner sparkle, humor, and zest for life.
Barb was the foundation of her family – a strong, organized, stubborn matriarch that held down the fort while Millard built the family business. She created a welcoming home for her children and many young adults, exchange students, friends, and other stragglers that stayed as long as they needed.
Loving mother of Laura (Michael Iversen) Young, Mark (Lisa) Young, Christine (Greg) Papke, and Michael (Michelle) Young who learned from her example that love is greater than wealth, and that there is always room for another plate at the dinner table; Beloved grandmother of several grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom enjoyed spending time with Grammy, listening to her stories and taking orders from her.
She was the cherished sister of Roger Bower, Ralph Bower, and Annette Pfalzer. Barb is also survived by one dear nephew, Lowell Bower, several other nieces and nephews, and many close friends that provided fun, love, and support during her life and her illness.
In memory of Barb, donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, P.O. Box 1525, Ranson, WV 25438 (lovetotherescue.org) or the Akron Masonic Lodge #527, 63 John Street, Akron, NY 14001.
