Cabaret concerts have ‘Pop goes the Movies’ theme

Akron Central Music Department is excited to present the 2022 “Pop Goes the Movies” themed concerts on April 2, 2022.  It was April of 2019 when the they last presented their Cabaret Concerts for friends and family in the school’s performance gymnasium. With pandemic restrictions lifted, the popular concerts return as the gymnasium is transformed into a nightclub with the glamour of Hollywood with lights, round tables, beverages and snacks.  The event will be a soundtrack of theatrical favorites and pop music.

The Middle School “Pops” concert will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by the High School concert at 7:00 p.m.

Directed by Mr. Brendon Bardo, Mrs. Debra Komosinski and Mrs. Meghen Pitts, the jazz and concert bands, middle school chorus and varsity chorale, will play and sing a repertoire of tunes audiences will recognize from the popular blockbuster movies.

Some of the featured selections for the Middle School Sixth Grade Band, directed by Mrs. Komosinski, include “Day-O” and “The Locomotion.”

The Middle School Jazz All-Stars, directed by Mr. Brendon Bardo, will perform “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story and “Gonna Fly Now” from Rocky. The Middle School Chorus, directed by Mrs. Meghen Pitts, will perform “Hall of Fame” and “One Call Away.” The Middle School 7th & 8th Grade Band will play “Ewok Celebration” from Star Wars, “Theme from Spiderman” and “Secret Agent Man,” among others.  Eighth grade students will be introduced and recognized for their years as middle school musicians.

The High School evening concert includes the Concert Band, Jazz Band and Varsity Chorale taking one of three staging areas of the gymnasium.  The Jazz Band will open their three-selection set with “Under the Sea” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid.  Following, the Varsity Chorale will perform “Dance Monkey,” “Wannabe” and “White Winter Hymnal.”  The Concert Band will round out the event, with renditions of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Bond…James Bond Road,” and “Music from The Incredibles,” and other surprises. The soon-to-be graduating Class of 2022 seniors will enjoy their moment during the graduate tributes.

The Akron Music Parents Association will hold its annual Chinese Basket Auction in the Library Media Center located near the Middle School entrance to the gymnasium.  Tickets may be purchased for a chance to win any of a huge selection of themed gift baskets donated by area businesses, music parents and friends of the ACS Music Department. The drawing for the baskets will be held at the end of the evening concert. 

Admission for either the Middle School “Pops” concert or the High School “Pop Goes the Movies” concert is just $4.00 in advance and $5.00 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased from any high school musician.
