Tributes flow for ACS Senior Class of 2020

As the end of the 2019-20 school year begins to wind down, traditions morphing into something new and different due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Governor’s Executive Order will keep Akron Schools closed through the end of the school year, while learning continues with online teaching and assignments or paper materials for those without internet access.  In the meantime, substitutes for year-end celebrations and events will have to do, making for unique memories during unprecedented times, particularly for Akron Central High School seniors and their families.

Wetzen funeral procession planned at 2 p.m. Friday, May 1

Burial for Thomas “Coach” Wetzen who entered into rest Saturday, April 25, will take place on Friday, May 1, 2020 with a Funeral Procession leaving Ross Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. heading through town, past Wetzen Field and ending at St. Teresa’s Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Veteran’s Association. Town of Newstead Highway resumes full work schedule under COVID-19 guidelines

The weekly COVID-19 Akron/Newstead Public Safety Team reports to Town of Newstead and Village of Akron Emergency Services Coordinator Dan Kowalik announced the Town of Newstead’s highway department return to a full-time work schedule on Monday, April 27.  The department is working 4 ten-hour days (Monday through Thursday).  Daily temperature monitoring and other COVID-19 protocols are in place.

Board of Education pushes pause on budget completion

by Marilyn J. Kasperek Akron Central School Board of Education members are pausing before finalizing a budget plan to come before voters later this spring.  Expectations of Pandemic adjustments during the year, state aid figures calculated on local data coming in lower than projected by the state, the Governor’s postponement of budget vote until at least June 1, and other factors, have the Board waiting to finalize the spending plan they will bring to voters.
