Local authorities monitoring Extreme Heat conditions, cooling shelter available

The Akron/Newstead Emergency Management team, Village of Akron and Town of Newstead, and local fire companies are monitoring and preparing to assist where needed in the extreme heat conditions expected this week. Noting that Heat related deaths and illnesses are preventable, Erie County has a number of resources https://www3.erie.gov/health/health/extreme-heat to help area residents. The Newstead Public Library is open as a cooling shelter during their regular hours: Monday from 12 noon to 8 p.m., Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  They are closed on

Akron Central School District Voters adopt budget

Akron Central School Voters approved a $43,926,821 budget for 2024-2025 on Tuesday with 317 yes, 127 no votes.  The budget represents a two percent increase in the tax levy, lower than the 5.82 percent allowed under the State Tax Cap calculation. Phillip Kenline and Erik Polkowski 305, were reelected to the Board of Education.  Kenline with 271 votes, Polkowski with   305 votes and Charles Roggen with 170 votes. Voters also approved the referendum to purchase two full size buses,      328 yes to    112 no.

Three Akron Middle School Historians compete in National History Day competition

Three Akron Central Middle School eighth grade students competed in the 2024 New York State History Day competition held at SUNY Oneonta on April 14, 2024.  Evan Iversen and the team of Adelaide Mandell and Hannah Liss, earned the trip to the state competition following their success at the regional event held at the Buffalo History Museum in March.  The events are part of the larger National History Day (NHD) program.

Akron Cheerleaders awarded Sportsmanship Award

Akron Central’s competition cheerleading squad completed a busy schedule with honors during the first week of February.  They attended the Attica Winter Wonderland Classic on Sunday, February 4 where the team had zero deductions (Hit Zero) for the first time this season and finished 2nd in their division. The stunt group of Madelyn Monkelbaan, Olivia Asmus, Amelia Ewing and Morgan Maggiore took a second place finish in the stunt-off. The team took the mat again on Wednesday, February 7, this time up in Newfane for the Niagara Orleans All League Competition.  The squad again Hit Zero and finished 2nd overall

Akron Central’s concerns over educational funding and mandates shared during Lobby Day in Albany

It is said, that if you want to become an instrument of change, gather people in your community and host a regular conversation.
