‘Stay off the roads’ is the message for Newstead and Akron residents Travel ban remains in effect

Town of Newstead and Village of Akron residents are being asked to stay off of the roads. Emergency Manager Dan Kowalik reports that the travel ban continues and those ignoring it are putting themselves and others at risk. Kowalik said non-essential vehicles continue to venture out, getting stuck, blocking roadways. “This delays our ability to clear the roads and get power crews to those still without electricity,” Kowalik said. “We are already into the middle of the week before we can get everything open and each stuck vehicle increases that timeline.” Loaders are working to open up the roads so

Travel bans continue

Travel bans in the Town of Newstead and Village of Akron remain in place this morning as crews continue to work to open up main roads. They are hampered by significant drifts and vehicles stuck in the roadways. The Town of Newstead is being assisted by a local company with hi-lifts in the efforts. Around 300 Town residents do not have power and there as some internet outages as well. Town of Newstead Supervisor David Cummings indicates the situation is difficult and everyone is doing their best to clear the roads. The Genesee County Sheriff issued an update this morning

Route 93 closed in Newstead

Route 93 from Route 5 to the Niagara County Line is now closed.  APD And the AFC fire chief advised Town of Newstead and Village of Akron Emergency Manager of two disabled tractor trailers stuck in the roadway. There is currently a travel ban in both the Village of Akron and Town of Newstead.

Emergency Manager for the Town of Newstead and Village of Akron, Dan Kowalik reports that as of 11:30 a.m. Electric Power was still on in the Village of Akron and the Town of Newstead had 190 customers without power as of 11:00 a.m. Pixley’s ShurFine is closing at noon today, December 23 and will be closed tomorrow as well. Both Akron and Newstead Fire Companies have standby crews in their respected halls.  Snow is blinding in the area.  Updates from both highway departments will be shared as available. Both the Town and Village have a travel ban in place.

Akron Central School closed on Friday, December 23

Akron Central School Superintendent of Schools Patrick D. McCabe announced this morning that due to forecasted extreme weather conditions, the Akron Central School District will be closed, including all afterschool activities, on Friday, December 23, 2022.  “We understand that the decision to close schools has a big effect on all members of our school community. It is our hope that early notification allows families additional time to make the necessary arrangements for work and childcare,” McCabe said. “We wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season.”
