Discoloration of Village of Akron water possible

Due to the ongoing severe cold temperatures, there has been a water main break within the Village of Akron water system. The Village Public Works Department has located the break and are working towards a solution. The break has created turbulence in the lines causing the occurrence of temporarily discolored water due to sediment in the pipes. There is not a boil notice in place at this time. The Village thanks residents for their patience.

Akron Central School Kindergarten Registration set for 2026-2027

The Akron Central School District has announced dates for Kindergarten Registration for the 2026-2027 school year. Parents of children born between December 2, 2020 and December 1, 2021 are reminded that it is time to register their child for kindergarten. Dates for registration packet drop off are Monday through Monday, February 2nd through February 13, 2026, from 8am until 3pm. Completed registration packets may also be emailed or mailed in. Recommendations for weathering the weather

Dan Kowalik Emergency Manager, Town of Newstead/Village of Akron, has shared the following information from Erie County. Due to expected winter storm conditions, a Travel Advisory will be in place for all of Erie County starting at 10 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2026. A multi-day winter weather storm with strong winds, heavy snowfall and dangerously cold temperatures will affect Western New York starting Monday, January 19. New Flagpole

Village of Akron personnel took advantage of the break in weather on Wednesday to begin installing a new flagpole in Russell Park. The new pole will fly an American Flag most of the year and will be used for the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop, replacing the crane currently used. A new ball is being fabricated which will be lighter and easier to use than the wrecking ball which has dropped to welcome in the new year for many years.

Water discoloration due to garage fire

The Village of Akron has announced that due to a garage fire that occurred in the Village today, there may be some discoloration in the water due to the high pull on the system from the fire hydrants. Koopman Selected for Conference All-State Symphonic Band

Akron Central High School senior Whitley Koopman has been selected to perform with the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Conference All-State Symphonic Band, one of the highest honors a high school musician can achieve in New York State. Akron Field Hockey players set State Records

Morgan Tomporowski and Marissa Brege of the Varsity Lady Tiger Field Hockey Team set state records with the season that recently concluded. Morgan Tomporowski scored a state record 49 goals in a single season and has earned her a spot among the all-time best, tied with three others who have scored 49 goals in a season for a ranking of 10th place.
