Board of Education pushes pause on budget completion

Kasperek Akron Central School Board of Education members are pausing before finalizing a budget plan to come before voters later this spring.  Expectations of Pandemic adjustments during the year, state aid figures calculated on local data coming in lower than projected by the state, the Governor’s postponement of budget vote until at least June 1, and other factors, have the Board waiting to finalize the spending plan they will bring to voters.

BoE sees strong public response to June 23 absentee ballot option

More than 1,000 voters have requested absentee ballots for the June elections since new mail-in and electronic submission options were posted online Monday, Erie County Board of Elections officials said Wednesday, April 15. A gubernatorial executive order issued last week opened the absentee process to anyone planning to cast a ballot Tuesday, June 23, in an effort to reduce traffic and the potential spread of Covid-19 at polling places.

Akron Fire Company to give Easter Bunny a lift

Akron Fire Company has organized a special ride for the Easter Bunny. They will have a full company parade through the Village of Akron with most of their apparatus on Easter Sunday beginning at 12:00 noon. The company is NOT handing out candy. They ask that you stay on your porches or in your yards and please make sure you are practicing social distancing when you see the parade. Almost overnight, churches had to go from planning an in-person worship to learning new ways to share the gospel, keep church families connected, and provide outreach to the community. Churches in Akron are adapting, many closing their physical doors to comply with government recommendations and mandates but opening their doors online — some broadcasting services over the web for the first time.

Happy Birthday Ray

SOCIAL DISTANCING BIRTHDAY PARADE – Many turned out to wish Ray Cheavacci a Happy 84th Birthday at his Carney Road home last Wednesday afternoon (April 1). A car caravan bearing balloons and signs of birthday wishes, as well as fire trucks, helped the Town of Newstead resident celebrate while keeping a safe distance.
