Food donations welcome as Food Pantry week approaches

With the current restrictions on large gatherings due to the pandemic, this year’s Food Pantry Party is an Akron-Newstead Food Pantry Week set for October 10-17, 2020. Food collection barrels and coin collection jars are located at various businesses in the village and town through October 16, 2020. BUILDING UNITY DAY OF GIVING – The Third Annual Back-To-School give-away sponsored by the Akron-Newstead Alliance was held on August 26 at the Newstead Senior Center, Cummings Road, Akron. 250 bags with supplies for students were given away. A free farmers market was also held that day with 100 bags of fresh produce distributed.

Town of Newstead residents, including the Village of Akron, will have two town elected positions to fill this November. They will select a person to complete the unexpired term (three years) of Town of Newstead Councilwoman Jeannine Morlacci who resigned May 27, 2020, and vote for someone to fill a full four-year term as Town Justice, following procedures to fill the position of Town Justice when someone elected to that position wishes to take retirement and continue to serve, which Town Justice Dennis Freeman opted to do.
