Portion of Rapids Rd to close Oct. 1
The portion of Rapids Road between Maple and Greenbush will be closed on October 1, 2020 starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 4:00 p.m. The Erie County Clarence Maintenance Barn will be replacing a cross culvert near house number 1261 Rapids Road. The work is only expected to take one day.

Student supplies distributed
BUILDING UNITY DAY OF GIVING – The Third Annual Back-To-School give-away sponsored by the Akron-Newstead Alliance was held on August 26 at the Newstead Senior Center, Cummings Road, Akron. 250 bags with supplies for students were given away. A free farmers market was also held that day with 100 bags of fresh produce distributed.

Local resident turns whiskey passion into business opportunity
By Rich Place For Dean Hyder, a longtime passion for whiskey has led to the establishment of Newstead’s first legal distillery and he will soon be sharing that passion with those who wish to stop by and have a taste. Hyder is putting the finishing touches on Old Scotland Road Distillery, located at 7010 Scotland Rd. just north of the Bloomingdale Avenue intersection, and hopes to be open to the public within the next couple weeks. Town of Newstead residents, including the Village of Akron, will have two town elected positions to fill this November. They will select a person to complete the unexpired term (three years) of Town of Newstead Councilwoman Jeannine Morlacci who resigned May 27, 2020, and vote for someone to fill a full four-year term as Town Justice, following procedures to fill the position of Town Justice when someone elected to that position wishes to take retirement and continue to serve, which Town Justice Dennis Freeman opted to do.
