Grower’s permit available for Bicentennial contest
The Akron Lioness Organization is sponsoring two Town of Newstead Bicentennial Celebration contests. A facial hair judging and an 1800’s garment judging will take place in the Russell Park Gazebo, Akron, NY at 3 p.m. on July 4th. Participants entering the facial hair contest must come, clean shaven to M.R. Middaugh’s Barber Shop at 71 Main Street, Akron, to obtain a grower’s permit which is available now. Categories are Best Beard, Best Moustache, and Best Sideburns. The 1800’s vintage clothing apparel contest categories are Best Women’s Costume, Best Men’s Costume, and Best Children’s Costume. Dawn Izydorczak was sworn in as Town of Newstead Supervisor on April 10. She resigned as Town Clerk and was appointed by the Newstead Town Board to fill the remainder of former Supervisor David L. Cummings’ term, who resigned because of health reasons at a previous meeting. Jennifer DiChristina was sworn in as Town Clerk, to fill the unexpired term of Izydorczak.

The Akron Celebration Committee is hosting New Year’s Eve in Russell Park again this year. The “Family Friendly” festivities begin at 11:30 p.m. with music, hot cocoa and more. Town of Newstead and Village of Akron residents are being asked to stay off of the roads. Emergency Manager Dan Kowalik reports that the travel ban continues and those ignoring it are putting themselves and others at risk. Kowalik said non-essential vehicles continue to venture out, getting stuck, blocking roadways. “This delays our ability to clear the roads and get power crews to those still without electricity,” Kowalik said. “We are already into the middle of the week before we can get everything open and each stuck vehicle increases that timeline.” Loaders are working to open up the roads so

The Akron and Newstead Fire Companies are working together with UTV’s to rescue stranded motorists in the Clarence Center Road and Dye Road area. There are reports of several stranded cars throughout Akron/Newstead.

Route 93 from Route 5 to the Niagara County Line is now closed. APD And the AFC fire chief advised Town of Newstead and Village of Akron Emergency Manager of two disabled tractor trailers stuck in the roadway. There is currently a travel ban in both the Village of Akron and Town of Newstead.
