33rd Annual Christmas Auction set for Friday

Tickets are available for the Annual Christmas Auction hosted by the Rotary Club of Akron-Newstead, scheduled for Friday, December 2, 2022.  The event, held at the Akron Fire Hall, 1 Main Street, Akron, New York will continue the club’s 33 year long tradition of making sure Christmas comes to those facing difficult times. Those wanting to help in this effort can purchase admission which includes Hors D’oeuvres and cash bar. New refuse, recycling contract moves forward

Newstead Town Board members have approved a new refuse, recycling contract with Modern Disposal effective in January. If approved by the Village of Akron Board of Trustees the contract will go into effect in January of 2023. Information on changes for pickup, including new 95/96 gallon carts, will be shared in the new year with an expected implementation of spring 2023.

Good for the Neighborhood cancelled tonight

The Good for the Neighborhood event scheduled for tonight, Thursday, November 17 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. the Center is cancelled. No rescheduled date is available at this time.  University Express Program rescheduled The University Express program planned for Friday, November 18 – 1:00 p.m. – Presidents in Buffalo: Unusual and Unknown Stories; is cancelled. It is rescheduled for Wednesday, December 7th.

Hometown Hero banners dedication planned Friday

Akron DPW has been installing Hometown Heroes banners in the village. The banners will be dedicated on Friday, September 16 at 7 p.m., according to Kristy Pingitore who chairs the program.  All are welcome to the dedication which will take place in Russell Park. Opportunities to participate in Bi-Centennial continue to emerge

The Town of Newstead Bi-Centennial Committee continues to work on plans for the 2023 observance.  Although 2023 seems a long way off, it takes many months to plan a huge celebration.  The bicentennial committee has tentative plans for a scavenger hunt, children’s activities, garden walk, cruise night/taste of Akron, Native American day, and many varied activities.  They welcome your participation in this planning.

Governor in Newstead for ribbon cutting

Governor Kathy Hochul and Town of Newstead Supervisor David L. Cummings were among state and local officials who celebrated the commissioning of Western New York’s newest large-scale electric transmission line, Empire State Line on Monday morning. Governor Hochul spoke on the importance of clean energy.
