Charles R. Thompson
Charles R. Thompson, 92 of Basom, New York, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at the Greenfields Health and Rehabilitation Facility in Lancaster, NY.
He was born August 31, 1932 in Akron, NY, a son of the late Jay and Minnie Buckholtz Thompson.
Survivors include his nephews, Robert (LaNora) Thompson of Basom and John (Lori) Thompson of Attica. Great nephews and niece, Daniel (Katie) Manges of Oakfield and Diana (Phillip) Harrison of Dansville, NY, Bryan (Robyn) Thompson of Irondequoit, Steven Thompson of Buffalo and Owen Thompson of Buffalo. Great-great nephews and nieces, Ryan Manges, Alaina Manges, Kaelyn Oliver and Brennan Harrison.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Joseph Thompson, Iona Thompson and Richard (late Lorraine) Thompson.
He began his employment on the family farm but in 1955, he became a truck driver and worked for Alex C. Smith Trucking in Akron, William Pfohl Trucking in Cheektowaga and retired from Robert Dombrowski Trucking in Orchard Park.
Charles enjoyed his retirement years helping and being with his two nephews Bob and John and their children. He helped Bob with his antique trucks and tractors and John transporting automobiles from the auto auction to his dealership. He also helped them take care of their late mother after Richard passed away.
He was a lifelong member of the Alabama Basom Global Methodist Church and served as a trustee for many years. He enjoyed going to the truck club meetings and taking his tractor to “tractor night” in Akron. Most of his evening meals were at the former Mary’s Restaurant in Akron and then at Sport of Kings in Batavia. He enjoyed being with the restaurant staff and other patrons. Charles also enjoyed mowing lawn and taking care of the family farm where he lived for 86 years. Charles was a man of faith, believed in having a good work ethic and helping others when he was able.
He was a member of the Alabama Basom Global Methodist Church, Alabama Fire Department and Empire State Antique Truck Association.
Family and friends are invited to share thoughts, condolences and fond memories on Thursday, February 13 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Alabama Basom Global Methodist Church, 1392 Church St, Alabama, NY, where a funeral service will begin at 11 a.m.
He will be laid to rest in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in Akron.
