Christmas in July concert draws delightful displays
A number of Christmas scenes dotted Russell Park last Friday night as the Akron Community Band presented its annual Christmas in July concert and Christmas display competition.
“The Twelve Days of Christmas” took first place, with “Candy Cane Lane” earning second, The American Legion Auxiliary display earning third and “Have Yourself a Beary Christmas” fourth. Prizes were provided by Pixley’s ShurFine, China King, Candy Apple Café, and Martin’s Mercantile.
Through the years
The theme for this week’s Akron Community Band Concert is “Through the Years.” The concert is presented in the Russell Park Gazebo, Main Street, Akron at 8 p.m. Friday, August 2 under the direction of Holly Meides and Karlyn Backus, with a variety of selections.
“Sinatra in Concert,” “The Blues Brothers Revue,” and “Eighties Flashback” are among the planned selections.
This is the sixth of eight scheduled concerts in their 101st season.
Upcoming concerts
Remaining concerts, sponsored by the Village of Akron, Town of Newstead, and County of Erie begin at 8 p.m. in the Russell Park gazebo, Main St., Akron on Friday, August 2; Friday, August 9; Friday, August 16.
All concerts are free to the public. Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended. There is some seating available in Russell Park.
The band presents varied programs with marches, show tunes, novelty numbers, overtures, pop tunes, and others.
There is no rain location this year. The band does everything possible to get a concert in each Friday night. Unless the radar shows there is no possibility of clearing by 8 p.m. the band will not cancel the concert prior to its scheduled start.
Treats
The Trinity Lutheran Church will be in the refreshment stand with treats for concert goers to purchase.
