Christmas in July concert includes opportunity to win prizes

Akron Community Band will present its annual Christmas in July concert in the Russell Park Gazebo, Main Street, Akron at 8 p.m. Friday, July 26 under the direction of Holly Meides and Karlyn Backus, with a variety of selections.

A variety of Christmas Season music selections are on the program, including:  “Santa meets Big Bands,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “The Polar Express,” “Sleigh Ride,” and “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.”

This is the fifth of eight scheduled concerts in their 101st season.

Prizes

All are invited to find your Christmas decorations and to make a plan to decorate your area for the annual Christmas display contest.  Gift Certificates provided by Candy Apple Café, China King, Pixley’s ShurFine, and a gift basket from Martin’s Mercantile, with a combined total of $140 will be awarded to the top displays.  Past winners have created a Christmas village, the scene around a Christmas tree, an inviting fireplace.

Judging begins at 7:30 p.m.  Break out your Christmas decorations and decorate your chair, the space around you, and/or yourself to participate in this fun event.

Upcoming concerts

Remaining concerts, sponsored by the Village of Akron, Town of Newstead, and County of Erie begin at 8 p.m. in the Russell Park gazebo, Main St., Akron on Friday, July 26, Friday, August 2; Friday, August 9; Friday, August 16.

All concerts are free to the public.  Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended.  There is some seating available in Russell Park.

The band presents varied programs with marches, show tunes, novelty numbers, overtures, pop tunes, and others.

There is no rain location this year.  The band does everything possible to get a concert in each Friday night.  Unless the radar shows there is no possibility of clearing by 8 p.m. the band will not cancel the concert prior to its scheduled start.

Treats

The American Legion Auxiliary will be in the refreshment stand with treats for concert goers to purchase.
