Confirmed COVID-19 cases in 14001 decrease for third week

COVID-19 updates on Wednesday indicated another decrease in confirmed new cases in the 14001 zip code, the second week new case totals were less than the previous week.

The confirmed number of new weekly cases in the 14001 Zip Code rose by 8 with a total of 664 since March 2020.

That follows a week with 12 new cases which continued a downward trend from 14 the previous week and 23 the week before that.

Town of Newstead/Village of Akron Emergency Manager, Dan Kowalik, is now receiving updates on vaccination rates as well.  As of May 12, 52.3 percent of eligible 14001 residents are fully vaccinated.  Kowalik encourages all to continue to be smart and follow the recommendations being sent forth by the local health officials as they are updated.

Both the Town of Newstead and Village of Akron have been under States of Emergency since March of this year due to the public health crisis caused by the Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

The continuing health crisis has the potential of threatening or imperiling the public safety of the residents and businesses in the Town and Village and the State of Emergency puts local government and other public safety agencies in a position to respond quicker and have more access to resources during the COVID-19 situation as it evolves.

New Yorkers 12 years of age and older are now eligible to receive the vaccine.  Akron Pharmacy has a limited number of J&J doses of the vaccine available and a mobile unit is expected to be in the Village of Akron sometime this spring.

If you are among those who become eligible, check New York State’s Am I Eligible website to find an appointment (if available) at a State-run vaccination site near you, or call 1-833-NYS-4-VAX.  VaccineFinder, a website affiliated with the CDC and Boston Children’s Hospital, can also help eligible New Yorkers find vaccination locations.
