Confirmed new COVID-19 cases in 14001 drop

COVID-19 updates on Tuesday indicated confirmed new cases in the 14001 zip code, dropped to two.

The confirmed number of new weekly cases in the 14001 Zip Code rose by 8 the previous week, and with this week’s 2, the total is now 682 since March 2020.

Over the past few weeks the weekly confirmed increase has gone from 23 to 14, to 12, to 8 in consecutive weeks, to 2.

Town of Newstead/Village of Akron Emergency Manager, Dan Kowalik, is now receiving updates on vaccination rates as well.  As of May 18, 55.3 percent of eligible 14001 residents are fully vaccinated, up from 53.5 the previous week.  Kowalik encourages all to continue to be smart and follow the recommendations being sent forth by the local health officials as they are updated.

New Yorkers 12 years of age and older are now eligible to receive the vaccine.  Akron Pharmacy has a limited number of J&J doses of the vaccine available and a mobile unit is expected to be in the Village of Akron for the Sidewalk Sale and first Cruise Night.

If you are among those who become eligible, check New York State’s Am I Eligible website to find an appointment (if available) at a State-run vaccination site near you, or call 1-833-NYS-4-VAX.  VaccineFinder, a website affiliated with the CDC and Boston Children’s Hospital, can also help eligible New Yorkers find vaccination locations.

Both the Town of Newstead and Village of Akron have been under States of Emergency since March of this year due to the public health crisis caused by the Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

The continuing health crisis has the potential of threatening or imperiling the public safety of the residents and businesses in the Town and Village and the State of Emergency puts local government and other public safety agencies in a position to respond quicker and have more access to resources during the COVID-19 situation as it evolves.
