Erie County Sheriff opens investigation into fatal accident in Newstead
According to Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Bureau has opened an investigation into a fatal pedestrian crash in the Town of Newstead.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. on March 2, deputies were dispatched to the area of 13399 Main Street for a report that a pedestrian was struck. Deputies observed the victim – a 55-year-old Newstead man – lying on the south side of the road with members of the Newstead Fire Company and Twin City Ambulance providing care. When Newstead Chiefs arrived on the scene they found one patient down. Newstead 1, 2, and 5 responded promptly, alongside Twin City Ambulance. Due to the nature of the injuries, Mercy Flight was also requested.
Newstead firefighters immediately began providing first aid and closed Main Road to ensure a safe work area for all emergency personnel. Following an assessment, the decision was made to transport the patient to an area hospital by Twin City Ambulance. To provide the highest level of care during transport, one Newstead firefighter rode in the ambulance to assist the paramedics with patient care.
The patient was transported by Twin City Ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead during surgery. Once the patient was enroute and the scene was cleared, the road was reopened and all units returned to service
The operator of the striking vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
