Extreme Cold warning issued
Dan Kowalik, Emergency Manager, Town of Newstead/Village of Akron, has asked that the following Advisories be shared with local residents.
Light to moderate snow will overspread the region today, February 6. having the potential for snow squalls tonight. Lake effect snow will develop Saturday south of Lake Ontario and linger into Sunday. Additionally, frigid air and gusty winds will arrive tonight and last into Saturday, with the cold air to linger throughout the weekend.
Hazards in Effect:
· Extreme Cold Warning in effect for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, southern Erie, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario from 1AM Saturday through 10AM Sunday
· Cold Weather Advisory in effect for northern Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Monroe, Wayne, and northern Cayuga from 1AM Saturday through 1AM Sunday

Hazards in Effect:
· Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 7AM Friday through 7PM Saturday for Niagara, Orleans, Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties. (updated 2:33 p.m. Thursday, February 5.)

An Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for the Capital District, Catskills, Eastern Hudson Valley, Southern Tier, Central NY, Northern NY, Finger Lakes, and Western NY Regions. An Extreme Cold Watch means that dangerous feels like temperatures are forecast or occurring. Temperatures will feel between -30 to -35 degrees Fahrenheit. Adjust your plans to avoid being outside during the coldest parts of the day.
For Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga, Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany Counties, the Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from 1:00 a.m. February 7 through 10:00 a.m. February 8.
For Saratoga, Warren, Washington, Schenectady, Albany, Rensselaer, Greene, Columbia, Ulster, Dutchess, Herkimer, Hamilton, Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie, eastern Clinton, and eastern Essex Counties, the Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from 6:00 p.m. February 7 through 1:00 p.m. February 8.
For St. Lawrence, Franklin, western Clinton, western Essex, Jefferson, Lewis, and Oswego Counties, the Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from 7:00 a.m. February 7 through 1:00 p.m. February 8.
For Oneida, Yates, Seneca, southern Cayuga, Onondaga, Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Madison, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, Tioga, Broome, Delaware, and Sullivan Counties, the Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from 4:00 a.m. February 7 through 1:00 p.m. February 8.
Avoid travel if possible. If you must go outside: dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and make sure at least one other person knows your whereabouts.
Watch for signs of hypothermia: confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness and stiff muscles. Seek medical attention if you experience these symptoms. If no help is available, the victim should be warmed slowly with warm liquids, along with dry clothes and blankets.
If you are stranded in a vehicle, avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by running the motor for 10 minutes every hour. While your car is running, open the windows slightly for fresh air. Keep your exhaust pipe clear of any obstructions.
