Fireworks light up the sky as Akron continues Celebration

The Akron Celebration Committee 2022 Fourth of July Celebration lit up the skies Sunday night as hundreds gathered to enjoy the fireworks. A full schedule of events is planned as the Celebration continues on the Fourth.

Breakfast

The Akron Masonic Lodge Fourth of July breakfast returns on the morning of July 4 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. in their hall on John Street. 

Races, food, and fun

The schedule for the morning of July 4th includes: 10:00 a.m. – Power Wheels Race – Main St, between Church and Clinton; 10:30 a.m. – Lions Club Bocce Tournament – Brooklyn Park; 11:00 a.m.- Soapbox Derby – Main St. between Church and Clinton; 11:00 – Methodist Church Chicken Barbecue in Russell Park; Food Stands in Russell Park, Pink Cow; 11:00 a.m. – Wolcottsville Wildlife in the Park; Face Painting – Market on Main; Activities for the Kids in Russell Park.

The Rich-Twinn Octagon House and Knight-Sutton Museum are open from 12:00-4:00 p.m.

The Power Wheels race, is followed directly by the Gravity Powered Soapbox Derby Race.  Organizers hope those planning to participate will click ”going” on the Facebook event page.

Rules for the event include:

Car must have steering, brakes, fit down Akron’s ramps (3′ x 6′ feet is about the largest size that works well).

Kids need to wear a helmet.

Other than that, creativity and spending time together is the blueprint for whatever old wheels, wood, and paint you bring together for the car.

Parades, food, entertainment

“Summertime Favorites” is the theme for the gala parade and “Dr. Seuss” is the theme for the Kiddie Parade. Local businesses are encouraged to participle and have a chance to win the coveted Business Trophy.

Afternoon plans include: 12:30 p.m. – Ice Cream eating contest–Russell Park (Sponsored by Pink Cow); 1:00 p.m. – Smoke Dancers in the Gazebo; 4:15 p.m. – Kiddie Parade to begin at Hart Street (Sponsored by Candy Apple Café); 4:30 – Gala Parade; Alexander Band in Russell Park following the parade; 6:00-8:00 Craig Wilkins in the Gazebo in Russell Park.
