Memorial Day observances honoring Akron-Newstead veterans announced

The longstanding tradition of honoring the sacrifices made by generations of veterans will take place Memorial Day weekend throughout the Town of Newstead and Village of Akron.

Activities begin Saturday, May 28 with the placement of flags by volunteers at more than 900 veteran gravesites and conclude with services Monday, May 30 at Russell Park and the Akron Fire Hall.

Here is the complete schedule, all open to the public.

Saturday, May 28

8:30 a.m. – Continental breakfast for volunteers placing gravesite flags. American Legion Post 900, 9 Eckerson Ave.

9-11 a.m. – Flags placed at area cemeteries

Monday, May 30

Wreath placement and flag ceremonies

7 a.m.  – L.L. Tillman grave, Evergreen Lawn Cemetery

7:40 a.m.  – Jeffery Miller grave, Pioneer Cemetery

8 a.m.  – American Legion Post 900

8:15 a.m.  – Breakfast at American Legion Post 900

9 a.m.  – Parade starts on upper Main Street, followed by ceremonies at Russell Park and Akron Fire Hall
