Senior Center to host Steel Drum concert
Akron/Newstead Senior Center, 5691 Cummings Rd., Akron, NY is planning a concert in Russell Park on July 20.
Carnival Kids Steel Drum Orchestra will play from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on July 20. This concert is sponsored by Independent Health. The Akron Newstead Seniors will sell Hot dogs, cookies, brownies, and beverages.
Basket raffle and BBQ
The annual basket raffle and chicken BBQ is fast approaching. The weeklong raffle begins on Tuesday, August 6 through Saturday, August 11 along with the chicken BBQ. The center is accepting donations now – new items only. Gift cards and monetary donations are also welcome.
Senior Outreach Services
Case managers will be at the Center on Wednesday, July 17 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. No appointment necessary. Individuals will be seen on a first come first served basis. Services are free of charge to all residents of the Town of Newstead

Safe Driver Academy
Save money on your car insurance and increase your driving skills with the Safe Drivers Academy on August 5, at 9:00 a.m. The cost will be $35. Other dates will be: September 16 and November 18. Lunch will be available afterwards with a suggested donation of $3.00 or you may bring your own.
CLUB 99
Club 99 will be coming to Akron Newstead Senior Center! Join the group on Mondays at 12:30 p.m. to improve balance, strength and confidence. This is a free program.
Second Annual Open House
The center will be open 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM with many exciting events. There will be half price memberships all day, a lottery ticket raffle, the Cheezy Chick food truck will be available from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM; the Pink Cow Food truck will be here from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM; and a Car Show from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Dinner and a Movie is planned on Thursday, July 25th at 4:30 will have dinner and a movie. Dinner will be French bread pizza, French fries, salad, and dessert. The movie will be “The Beautiful Game” Cost will be $5.00.
Grief and Support Group
Friday, July 19at 11:00 AM and the 3rd Friday of every month, there will be a group of fellow members who have experienced loss. This is not a counseling session; just friends supporting friends.

Transportation
The Erie County Senior Services’ Going Places Van Transportation program is available to assist local Senior citizens with transportation needs on Tuesday and Friday.
Curb-to-curb van service is available to Erie County resident seniors living independently but unable to use conventional means of transportation. Reservations for health-related trips may be scheduled up to two weeks in advance, and non-medical trips may be scheduled one week in advance. A brief registration is required for service, and calls can be made to between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Going Places provides van service for older adults’ trips to the doctor, clinic, hospital, counseling, therapy, trips to Stay Fit Dining Sites or grocery stores, and for personal business such as banking or bill-paying, HEAP, Social Services appointments, HIICAP (health insurance information and counseling), etc.
The phone number for transportation services through the Going Places Van has changed to 858-RIDE or 858-7433.
Also offering transportation to area seniors is Rural Transit Service. They have local schedules everyday reservations and more information may be obtained by calling 741-9709.
Senior Programing
The Center provides a number of programs designed to inform, entertain, and to provide nutritious, tasty meal selections. Some of the programs are open to all seniors in the Town of Newstead, such as the daily lunches, outreach programs, and some trips. Others are offered only to members of Akron/Newstead Senior Citizens Inc. Renewals and new applications for Akron/Newstead Senior Citizens Inc. membership are now being accepted. Sign Up is needed.
