Sixteen new COVID-19 cases confirmed in 14001
The confirmed number of cases in the 14001 Zip Code since March of 2020 continued to rise, now 550, in new weekly cases, up 16 from 534 last week, and 530 the week before.
Town of Newstead/Village of Akron Emergency Manager, Dan Kowalik, gave a COVID-19 update on Tuesday.
Kowalik reminds local residents they need to continue to be smart and follow the recommendations being sent forth by the local health officials.
PPE for local Town and Village Employees, including Police and Fire is an ongoing role of the Emergency Managers throughout the pandemic. They have maintained a good supply through purchases, Cares Act Grant, Erie County, Elected Officials and FEMA. While never running out during the last year, a need continues, and they continue to look for PPE sources. In mid-January of this year, Kowalik reached out to Ford Motor Company regarding their mask give away to local First Responders, Police and Essential Workers.
The response to his request for 6,000 masks was 6,840 Ford made masks delivered last week. “This is great news for our great Employees of the Town and Village to get this donation from Ford,” Kowalik noted.
Also added to the local inventory recently was additional PPE from the County.
States of Emergency in the Village of Akron and Town of Newstead continue through April 7 and 5 respectively.
Both municipalities have been under States of Emergency since March of this year due to the public health crisis caused by the Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
The continuing health crisis has the potential of threatening or imperiling the public safety of the residents and businesses in the Town and Village and the State of Emergency puts local government and other public safety agencies in a position to respond quicker and have more access to resources during the COVID-19 situation as it evolves.
New Yorkers 50 years of age and older are now eligible to receive the vaccine. Limited supply from the federal government means that New Yorkers still need to remain patient. If you are among those who become eligible, check New York State’s Am I Eligible website to find an appointment (if available) at a State-run vaccination site near you, or call 1-833-NYS-4-VAX. VaccineFinder, a website affiliated with the CDC and Boston Children’s Hospital, can also help eligible New Yorkers find vaccination locations.
