Town Board practices social distancing, cancels work session
The Newstead Town Board practiced social distancing as they met in the Newstead Town Hall, 5 Clarence Center Road, Akron. Those present sat more than 6 feet apart, and continued that distance when coming to and leaving the meeting.
No one from the public attended the meeting, however protocol is in place should a person or persons want to address the board at future meetings while social distancing is in place. The Board voted to cancel their work session on Monday, April 20, and those wishing to address the Board at their April 27 meeting should contact the Town Hall, 716-542-4573 to make arrangements to do so.
Town of Newstead Supervisor David Cummings paused during the meeting in memory of Don Caple, a long time farmer in the community, who had served the community in various ways over the years including as a member of the Newstead Fire Co, AMVets, American Legion, and the NY Gas and Steamshow Association, and as one who was willing to share his opinions.
Board members received a copy of a letter the Department of Transportation sent to New York State Senator Michael Ranzenhofer and New York State Assemblyman Michael Norris regarding a decision to maintain the current 50 MPH speed limit on Hake Road.
Supervisor Cummings reported he is working closely with the Emergency Coordinators during the COVID-19 pandemic working with them daily to address any issues that come up. Cummings noted that Emergency Services Coordinator and Code Enforcement Officer David Miller are working with Leisurewood Campgrounds and Sleepy Hollow on ways to keep activity down and safely open these areas which are home to a number of seasonal residents. Cummings also reported the Town Attorney and CEO Miller are working with contractors to clarify what is essential and what is non-essential construction. “There are new rules every day,” Cummings noted.
Robert Massaro and Dan Carroll were hired as part-time summer employees.
Assessor Tina M. McQullen’s report indicated she will be wrapping up the informal hearings on assessment changes the last week of April and there are still time slots available for those conversations.
