Village of Akron continues to work on moving East Ave. rebuild forward
Village of Akron representatives will be walking East Avenue and possibly Bloomingdale Avenue with Erie County representatives in an effort to continue moving forward toward reconstruction of the infrastructure and roadway.
Mayor Perry indicated he hopes to have a conversation with NY Senator Patrick Gallivan this week about needs within the Village including that project.
Perry also reported on discussions with the two bidders to build the new transformer for the Village. Four out of five companies that received information on the pending purchase submitted bids and information is being gathered to accurately compare a Buffalo area bidder and one from Missouri.
Village Clerk Jayne DeTine reported that over 95 percent of village taxes are paid and that paperwork required by FEMA for Blizzard related expenses is nearly complete.
Police Chief Lauricella reported an increased number of traffic complaints on East Ave. with the detour around the Crittenden Road bridge in place. The APD is monitoring speeds in that area as well as Skyline.
Code Enforcement Officer Mike Borth reported that property maintenance notices are going out and that he is working on fire inspections this month and into September.
Board members passed a motion to approve a contract for HVAC controls at the Joint Facility with Clayton Mechanical not to exceed $19,000) The Village of Akron’s share.
Also approved was a resolution to approve payment of $156.00 to Betty Klawer at 160 Main St. to replace 48 square feet of sidewalk.
Mayor Perry expressed appreciation for the pro-active efforts made by the Village of Akron Water plant operators which to date have avoided taste quality problems experienced last year. He also thanked the Town for their work at the reservoir to clean the banks and noted the current temperature is one degree less Celsius than last year at this time.
During Work Session, a report from Akron Fire Company indicated they will have a Fire extinguisher demonstration at the last August Thursday Cruise night, rain or shine. They also noted working with the Newstead Fire Company to develop a plan for joint response to any confirmed fire.
Brian Murray met with the board during Work Session to share a plan to develop the property adjacent to the Legion building on Eckerson Ave. for public use if a lease with the Village of Akron which owns that property can be obtained. Discussion indicated a plan for a combination sale of part of the parcel and lease of the remainder will be developed.
Perry reported on a positive Sales Tax revenue stream this year.
Murray expressed appreciation for work on short term rental restructuring and asked the Board to move forward with making fee schedule changes.
President of the Akron Chamber of Commerce, Jacob Halleck reported the Chamber is working on the possibility of hosting a Fall Fest and has started planning for the annual Christmas event
Project updates
Reports on ongoing projects in the village indicated restoration and installation of new controls is underway at the Wastewater Treatment Plant; the Skyline Waterline Loop is complete with the exception of planting two trees; designs for the State Street Bridge are nearly complete.
Ideas being explored
Village Board members indicated they would look into addressing concerns raised by Village resident Kay Green regarding access to fire equipment when vehicles are parked on both sides of narrow streets in the village, as well as the lack of concrete barriers between parking and the splash pad.
Board members discussed decorative rocks in the Park and measuring village streets while developing a unified plan in conversation with the Akron Fire Company.
Building permits
Building permits were approved for a fence at 241 East Ave., remodel, fence, and kennel concrete at 35 Lewis Rd., sign at 10 Eckerson Ave., New business at 398 Railroad St., replace driveway at 83 Bloomingdale Ave., and roof at 9 Liberty St.
A temporary dumpster permit was approved for 9 Liberty St.
