Village water customers encouraged to let their water drip

A Code Red was issued to Village of Akron water customers on Friday afternoon encouraging them to let their water drip during the extreme cold conditions. “Due to the depth of the frost in the ground and the predicted low temperatures anticipated for the weekend, the village advises residents to allow faucets to drip overnight to keep your water service from freezing. Thank you,” the alert advises.

The frost level in the Village of Akron is currently about 2 and a half feet deep, with the potential for freezing pipes increasing as cold weather continues according to a report at Monday night’s Village Board meeting.  Village of Akron Mayor Brian Perry encouraged residents to keep a faucet dripping overnight to help keep their water service from freezing and asked that a code red be sent out to that effect.

A large watermain break in the village last Friday has been repaired. Any discolored water that occurred as a result of that break will take a short time to flush through the lines.

Fiber Internet

Village Board members met with a representative of Empire Fiber Internet to discuss their interest in installing fiber in the Village of Akron.  The company is seeking easements and pole permit information to build out a system which would make their internet and digital products available throughout the village.  The company is trying to expand into rural communities.  They would connect their cable to Village of Akron poles, paying for any work needed to change current electric wires and/or poles to accommodate their cable.  They would also pay a per pole rental fee.

The project will take a year to year and a half to build out once all of the permits and permissions are obtained and a plan finalized.

E-Bike legislation

Akron Police Chief Rick Lauricella is pulling together samples of legislation regulating E-Bikes for the Board to review.  The samples will provide a basis from which the Board can develop its own regulations.

Action items

Board members approved a twenty-year lease with the Akron Lions’ Club for the property on which they received permission to build a pole barn to house supplies needed for community service projects such as Avenue of Flages.  The lease calls for the option of renewal every three years after the initial time period and sets in place maintenance and other expectations for the Club’s use of the property.

They also approved a Resolution to approve the 2025-2028 Union Contract with the Department of Public Works, and a resolution to approve payment to Ramboll for continued Engineering Services in the amount not to exceed $10,000 for the Electric Substation Upgrade.

NHS update

A representative of the Newstead Historical Society appeared before the Board to share an update on upcoming NHS plans.  NHS is planning a Cemetery tour with a ceremony on the Fourth of July to recognize Revolutionary War veterans.  On Sunday, July 5, demonstrations are planned at the Octagon House and a Revolutionary War display is planned at the Knight-Sutton Museum.

NHS is planning a Fish Fry Fundraiser on February 20 from 4:30 p.m. until sold out at the Masonic Temple, John Street.  Local merchants will have tickets.
