Walter John Edwards
Walter John Edwards, known to all as Walt passed away on June 19, 2025. He was born on March 27, 1932, in Avoca, NY, to the late Olin and Florence (Towner) Edwards.
He resided in Akron, NY, where he served his community as a Water Treatment Operator for the Village of Akron until his retirement. Prior to working for the village of Akron, he was an air traffic controller at LaGuardia airport in New York City and then later at Buffalo International. His humble and steadfast nature made him a pillar of his community and a beloved figure in his family. Despite his quiet demeanor, Walter’s actions spoke volumes about his character. When he made a commitment, he always followed through. His resilience and strength were evident in his service during the Korean War, where he distinguished himself as a Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force.
Walter was a devoted family man. He was the loving father of Michael (Debbie) Edwards and Laurie (Mark) Barszcz. His unwavering love extended to his cherished grandchildren, Tyler (Katie) Edwards, Austin Edwards, Taylor Barszcz, and Trent (Heather) Barszcz. His joy in life was further magnified by the births of his great-grandchildren, Travis PeQueen, Ayden PeQueen, Lochlan W. Edwards, Teagan Barszcz, Wyatt Edwards, and Alexandra Edwards. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Caroline (Foley) Edwards. He will be deeply missed by his beloved pets, Cinder and Coco, who were always by his side.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Akron, 122 Main Street, Akron, NY 14001. Arrangements by Ross Funeral Home of Akron, LLC.
Walt’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and community. He taught us to be humble, consistent, and steadfast in our commitments. He demonstrated that a quiet demeanor can speak volumes, and that actions truly speak louder than words. He will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walt’s memory to the First Baptist Church of Akron.
