“What martial arts name means ‘gentle way’?” That is just one example of the quiz-show challenge questions that teased students on the morning announcements at Akron High School as Scholastic Bowl Coach Mr. David Meli was putting his team together for the 2024 Scholastic Bowl. Community is focus of ‘Light up Akron!’
Community is the focus of the annual ‘Light Up Akron!” event set for this Saturday, December 9. The community is coming together to celebrate the holiday season with music, food, opportunities to find that special gift for loved ones and for those you may never meet but who need a little something to bring them cheer, a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and Lights. Organizers hope the community will light up their homes, adding to lights already on Main Street and in Russell Park.

Both Newstead Historical Society museums open for the holidays
Rich-Twinn Octagon House is decorated for an old fashioned 1850’s Victorian Christmas and open for tours. The NHS “Highlights of the Octagon” tours takes place on Sundays, December 3, December 10, and December 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. There reduced fees for youth 11 -17 years old and children 5 and under tour for free.

#OneAkron, a theme designated for the new 2023-24 academic school year, was clear and present at the opening of Akron Central School last week. While Akron School’s five music teachers performed a rousing instrumental rendition of Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” faculty and staff members gathered in the Edward Allen Auditorium on Friday, September 1, for the start of the first of two jam-packed Superintendent’s Conference Days.
